Oh Ben. You never understood all along did you? The indigenous people of the United Kingdom are the English in England, the Welsh in Wales and the Scottish in Scotland. Our friends over the water in Eire are the Irish. Northern Irish are an interesting addition made up of the Irish and all three of the others. We are each a separate ethnicity and although we have now grown up and pretty much worked out most of differences we are proud to be separate but together. We still don’t always agree but one thing we hate is others interfering with our disagreements. We are a family and we don’t like to air our United Kingdom laundry in public.

You are not English, Welsh, Scottish or Irish but we are very glad you joined us as a Pakistani Briton.

We are fed up of the attempted erasure of ethnicity and culture. In years to come people will say the English never existed unless we reclaim our proud culture and heritage now.

So please stop saying you are English. It hurts us.
