🚨 WHEN ELECTED TERMS EXPIRE, DEMOCRATIC ACCOUNTABILITY MUST NOT DISAPPEAR.

The people of Uttar Pradesh's villages have a constitutional right to elected local self-government. Yet the tenure of gram pradhans and other rural representatives expired on 26 May 2026,and the state government appointed outgoing pradhans as temporary administrators instead of holding fresh elections.

The Allahabad High Court has now directed the state government and State Election Commission to complete the panchayat election process within three months. The court has also made clear that pending OBC reservation work must not become a reason for indefinitely postponing elections.

So the question is unavoidable:

Why was the necessary preparation delayed, and who benefits when voters are denied the opportunity to elect their village representatives?

The Wire's report by Omar Rashid highlights a troubling political possibility: holding panchayat elections shortly before the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election scheduled for February–March 2027 may be inconvenient for the ruling BJP.

That is a question of legitimate public concern—not proof of political motive. The government must answer it transparently.

⚖️ OUR DEMANDS

1. Implement the Allahabad High Court's directions and announce a clear, public election timetable.
2. Explain the administrative delays and make the relevant records available for public scrutiny.
3. Complete the legally required reservation process without using it to justify an indefinite suspension of elected local government.
4. Respect the constitutional mandate of regular panchayat elections and the democratic rights of rural citizens.
5. Ensure that temporary arrangements do not become a substitute for elected representatives.

Democracy is not limited to Parliament and Assembly elections. It begins in our villages, where people need accountable representatives to address roads, water, sanitation, employment and local development.

No government should be allowed to treat elections as optional merely because the political timing is inconvenient.

The Constitution must prevail over political calculations. The people must prevail over the convenience of those in power.

✊ DEMAND DEMOCRACY. DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY. DEFEND LOCAL SELF-GOVERNMENT.
