What makes me suspicious about virtue signaling is that some of the most oppressive regimes call(ed) themselves "democratic." DPRK is Democratic People's Republic of Korea. DDR stands for German Democratic Republic. Communist Poland was called Polish People's Republic.

They believed that they were protecting the oppressed worker class. They were destroying individuals in the name of an ideology. If you criticized them, you were the enemy of the people, you were siding with the oppressor. I see a lot of the same logic here and I cringe.
