The Gulf of Mexico was named by Spanish explorer Francisco Hernández de Córdoba in 1517. He named it "Golfo de México" after the Aztec word "Mexihco," which referred to the ancient Aztec capital city of Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City). The name was later anglicized to "Gulf of Mexico" by English-speaking explorers and traders.
