We examined how care home profits changed during the pandemic and found that profitability had actually soared for some of the private operators. Great article today in the @ObserverUK by @shanti_das

My new report with @CICTAR_Tax examines how the ownership of adult care homes has changed over the past 5 years in Cymru (Wales). A 34% fall in places by not-for-profits with the only notable growth coming from for-profits and private equity-owned firms. https://t.co/IVnirTm1ov
Current economic approaches to competition cases struggle to tackle harms from size & market power. A new report I've written with @BalancedEconomy explains how financial analysis enhances the economic approach eg in cases of suspected excessive pricing https://t.co/l5Ao3Xo1Al
I was interviewed as part of a #Fileon4 Investigates programme about the corporate takeover of high street vets. Airs at 8pm tonight on @BBCRadio4 and also available on demand. #vets#pets

Big English nursery chains are making bumper profits and taking on large debts. Great to work with @jrf_uk@C_AguilarGarcia @GuardianHeather to bring light to this essential but under-researched sector.
Contributed to tonight's @BBCPanorama about overseas staff exploited in a UK care home. Highlights the concerning mix of profits and staff exploitation in the sector. https://t.co/SxCIonqXdK
Excited to contribute a piece to the @jrf_uk series on childcare. I wrote about regulatory gaps using insights gained from looking at other care sectors.
See our latest article by @VivekJKotecha about the regulatory gaps in childcare. This follows on from our work looking into the growing profiteering and dangers in other parts of the care system.
Great overview of my new report with @CICTAR_Tax looking into the lucrative world of care home real estate. We estimate around £1.3bn a year is paid in rent by care homes. Much of it rising yearly with inflation, putting pressure on fees. @hettieveronica@atulkshah@Naomi_Fowler
Our new report worked on with @CICTAR_Tax covered in the Guardian editorial. The report highlights the lucrative business of care home real estate, its selective nature, and the risks of a two tier system developing.
Cases like this involving for-profit care for our elders demonstrate what's wrong> https://t.co/9jSI4No0iL
We looked at the financialisation of our services & what we can do about it years ago on @TheTaxcast featuring @VivekJKotecha It remains sadly urgent https://t.co/fy6QtX4gZa
Trinava's findings featured in @christinespolar's @FortuneMagazine article about private equity in elderly care. A great example of the complicated company structures we’ve found within the sector that hide a fragile business model.

Vivek Kotecha, of Trinava Consulting, said the pandemic “didn’t stop the growing gap between director and staff pay” in care homes.
“Rising profits raise concerns over whether the additional government funding was spent on the front line as intended,” he added.
The @FerretScot's piece on rising care home profits and high director's pay building off our recent analysis – showing yet again the growing trend in profitability for private companies during/since the pandemic @billybriggs
NEW: Director of care home paid £2.27m
A director of a care home firm in Scotland — which is owned in a tax haven and pays some of its staff just over minimum wage — was paid £2.27m in 2020.

For the 4 biggest UK elderly care home providers, more than 1 in 9 of their care homes are owned by offshore companies. Great work with @CICTAR_Tax@JasonWardCICTAR@unisontheunion

Yesterday’s piece showing our findings highlights the soaring company profits of private care homes during the pandemic whilst staff and residents had to make sacrifices - a trend we're seeing in other industries (eg profiting from inflationary price increases)
