Performance Estimates (Conceptual, for a 10-50 MW IT Load AI DC)

PUE: Target 1.1-1.3 (vs. 1.5+ for traditional air).
Water Savings: 40-90%+ reduction via PCM buffering, dry rejection, recycling, and/or seawater.
Energy Savings: 30-60% on cooling via passive PCM, free cooling, and heat recovery (e.g., reuse for nearby heating or absorption).
CAPEX/OPEX: Higher upfront for PCM/liquid infrastructure but offset by lower energy/water bills and density gains (more compute per sq ft). Payback 3-5 years in high-cost areas.
Heat Reuse: Capture 70-90% waste heat for district energy, boosting overall efficiency.

Challenges & Mitigations

Corrosion/Supercooling/Phase Separation (Salts): Use nucleating agents, thickeners, and compatible encapsulation. Test for 1000+ cycles.
Cost & Scalability: Salt hydrates are cheap; modular tanks ease deployment.
Safety: Non-toxic common salts; containment for leaks.
Location: Ideal for coastal (seawater) or variable-climate sites (free cooling + PCM).
Regulations: Comply with water use, environmental discharge, and energy efficiency standards.

This design builds on proven elements (liquid cooling, PCMs in buildings/electronics, seawater pilots) into a cohesive, salt-centric system tailored for AI demands. For implementation, detailed modeling (CFD, TRNSYS), pilot testing, and partnership with specialists (e.g., in PCM encapsulation or data center liquid cooling) would be next steps. Prototypes could start with retrofits on existing liquid-ready facilities.
