On one side:

Katara learning bloodbending quickly is actually consistent with the lore: she had extreme emotional motivation, raw talent, and had already mastered advanced waterbending forms.

On the other side:

Bolin unlocking lava bending is also consistent with established bending logic, he’s a rare earthbender with strong adaptability and was pushed into a life-or-death situation, which is basically how new sub-skills often awaken in the franchise.

The disagreement usually comes from this:

Some fans prioritize emotional storytelling moments (Katara vs Hama = trauma-driven mastery)
Others prioritize training consistency and buildup (Bolin suddenly getting lava bending feels “less earned” to them)

But if you look at the franchise overall:

Both moments are actually doing the same thing: showing extreme bending potential unlocking under pressure.

So yeah, it’s less “peak vs bad writing” and more:

different fans valuing different types of narrative payoff.
