HAPPY NEW YEAR (of school)! We've got a whole new group of curious learners in first grade this year, ready to show what they know and fearlessly INQUIRE about the rest. Are you as excited to learn as we are?!?
Tuesday we celebrated Beach Day in our class! We listed to Hawaiian tunes, live streamed video from a coral reef, and did our best to pretend that we really could feel the sand between our toes as we read and learned together... maybe next year??? 😎🌴
In our SUMMER Countdown, today's "M" stands for MYSTERY. We used our very best detective skills to solve the mystery that Nate the Great left us. All clues pointed to a very tasty snack. Nate's favorite -- PANCAKES!
Students chose a dinosaur to research, then looked up information, created a slideshow, and presented it to their classmates ON THEIR OWN. Wow! Are these kids amazing, or what?!? SO IMPRESSIVE!!!

Students made imprint fossils using bread & gummy worms. The bread served as our layers of sediment, covering the animal bones (gummy worms). Heavy books were added as pressure on top of the layers, to try to replicate what occurs in nature.

We practiced "excavating" fossils (chocolate chips) from rock (chocolate chip cookies) last week. Students loved acting like paleontologists (and being able to eat the "fossils" at the end was a big plus!)! 😀

Our classroom recently received a set of 10 student headphones from a generous @DonorsChoose donor! What a blessing! We use our headphones daily and reflect often on the kindness of our donor, and ways we can spread kindness to others.

Our inquiry into "How Things Work" is a student (and teacher!) favorite. Here are students before and after one of our first "experiments" in class.

7-YEAR-OLD SCIENTISTS!?! Yes, yes we are. 👩🏾🔬 Geologists, to be precise! Using our senses to explore the rocks, and attributes to sort them.
