On #WorldMentalHealthDay, we're thinking about how the stories we tell in sport affect how athletes see toughness, perfection, and success, and whether it feels safe to ask for help.
At the 2026 TrueSport Talks Symposium, @StephenBorelli, and Christine Brennan (@cbrennansports) from USA Today, Olympian and USADA Vice Chair, Kara Goucher (@karagoucher), and Kate Hartman Rosenzweig from the USOPC will look at how media narratives and cultural expectations can influence athlete mental wellness, and how intentional storytelling can help build sport cultures that are safer and more resilient.

When it comes to youth sport, setting boundaries is a form of self care.
Saying no to an extra commitment, protecting time for school or family, or stepping back when a schedule becomes unsustainable does not mean an athlete cares less about sport. Clear boundaries can protect time, energy, relationships, enjoyment, and long-term participation.
TrueSport Expert and licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Melissa Streno shares how caregivers and athletes can set boundaries that support the whole family—not just the next practice or opportunity.

Rest is not something you earn.
Rest is a basic part of caring for your body and mind. It can mean sleeping, taking a day off, doing something you enjoy outside of sport, or stepping back when your schedule feels overwhelming.
Making space to rest can help athletes return with more energy, perspective, and enjoyment.
How do you know when you need a reset?

Trick or Treat? More training always leads to better performance. 🦇
Trick. Athletes need recovery, too. Sleep, rest days, fueling, hydration, and time away from sport help athletes recover, reduce burnout risk, and return ready to support their teammates.
Choose one recovery habit to prioritize this week: sleep, fueling, hydration, a rest day, or time away from sport.

Here's to the coaches who believed in you before you believed in yourself. The best coaches teach more than the game. They teach kids how to be good teammates, handle tough days, and keep showing up. Happy #NationalCoachesDay.

It's #NationalYouthSportsWeek. Kids don't come back because of a trophy. They come back for the coach who believed in them, the teammates who picked them up, and the adults who kept it fun. This week, we're celebrating everyone who makes sport a place kids want to be.

Feeling nervous before competition does not mean you are unprepared or that you do not belong.
Performance anxiety can be shaped by many pressures: social media, comparison, expectations about the future, frequent competition, and a culture that values outcomes over progress. The first step is noticing where that pressure is coming from and returning your attention to what you can control.
TrueSport Ambassador Luke Wang shares his perspective on performance anxiety. Watch the video, then explore six reasons performance anxiety is high in youth sport: https://t.co/Xpt60ziOSO

Self-care in youth sport is not a spa day. It is a decision.
It is the boundary a family holds when every other team says yes. It is the shortcut an athlete chooses to skip. It is the consistent call a coach makes so athletes are not left guessing. It is the definition of success an athlete chooses for themselves—not the one social media hands them.
This October, TrueSport will explore what self-care really looks like in youth sport: the everyday choices that protect well-being, keep sport in perspective, and help athletes stay connected to why they play.
Stay tuned for practical self-care guidance for athletes, coaches, and families all month long!

Meet Olympian and USADA Emeritus Board Chair, Edwin Moses.
Edwin brought a scientist’s mindset to the track. A gifted student-athlete, he earned an academic scholarship to Morehouse College, where he studied physics and engineering while competing in track and field. He applied that analytical approach to the 400-meter hurdles, pioneering a 13-step rhythm between hurdles and helping redefine the event. Moses went on to win Olympic gold in 1976 and 1984—proof of what can happen when curiosity, preparation, and purpose come together.
Here is what Edwin would tell his younger self:
“Even the puny little kid way in the back of the pack has championship qualities. Don’t stop now!”
What advice would you give your younger self? Share it in the comments.
