Last month, our team at Cleanview broke the news that Amazon is building the biggest natural gas plant in America.

Since then, we've identified 8 gas plants linked to Amazon data centers with a combined capacity of 17.5 GW.

Amazon, like other hyperscalers, have tried to avoid building new power infrastructure to support their data centers. Doing so is costly and slow compared to using the existing grid.

But in recent years, as demand for compute has exploded, it’s become harder for Amazon to identify data center sites where this is possible. Existing infrastructure only supports giga-scale data center development in so many places.

Everywhere else, Amazon needs someone to build new firm power generation. And in the AI era, that has meant one thing: new natural gas power plants.

In Cleanview's latest report on Amazon's power strategy, we found that utilities and independent power producers are building 17.5 GW of new gas generation to serve Amazon’s growing power needs.

That’s roughly 1.5 times as much power as New York City consumes at its peak in a given year.

Amazon's gas portfolio now rivals the solar portfolio the company has spent 15 years building as you can see in the chart below.
