A general result is that core institutions, in the form of ill-enforced property rights, are fundamental causes of cross-country asymmetries in trends and cycles.

We find that differences in institutional quality between the crisis countries and other euro area countries help explain the different impact that the 2008 global financial crisis had on core and peripheral euro area countries.
