The destruction and collapse state capacity in the past 30 years is scary. Here is a window to get some sense.

Let's go win, @drtlaleng. Care and love in action🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹. Johannesburg will see what public service should look like. The @EFFSouthAfrica Johannesburg Mayoral Candidate😍🔥#VoteEFF2026
@QhayiyaN Not sure how serious you are. But in case you are, go and have a look at the National Food and Nutrition Security Survey released by HSRC. But I would also recommend you read a book Empty Plate by Tracey, she simplifies this nicely.
I want to warn all South Africans to avoid any twar with Kenyans. It’s not worth it. They said we must grow our own food or continue to dance for whites. I have not recovered. We must resolve the land question. These Gen Zs' trolling is on another level. They tell elders "F*!k you all" at funerals.
@rzondo@TshimomolaGK After banks introduced apps, how many brsnches closed? How many jobs were lost? When last did u visit a bank branch? Me,2024,collecting the card.
It will be a mistake to want to influence were one doesn’t have neither leverage nor influence. The point is not to stop technological innovation and development, it is its guided application that takes context into account. You leave in a society that has more than 60% unemployment amongst youth, you cannot afford to just throw your hands in the air and cry, “you can’t stop this”.
If you understand what these new self-checkout trolleys mean for jobs, simply ignore them. Stick to traditional trolleys and cashiers. We need those jobs. There is a community in Observatory, Cape Town, near UCT's medical campus, that is blue-ticking those trolleys at a Pick ‘n Pay, not sure if it’s working. Progressive comrades, those.
GAUTENG’S FIRST SMART TROLLEYS
The Shoprite Group has opened a new Checkers FX, UNIQ Clothing by Checkers and Petshop Science at Eastway Midstream Estate in Centurion, creating 72 new jobs.
The standout feature is the upcoming launch of Gauteng’s first Checkers Xpress Trolleys, which will allow customers to scan products, track spending and pay directly from their trolley, avoiding traditional checkout queues.

@rzondo A CEO of a tech company said, technology introduced responsible, context based and clearly controlled does not need to take prior away. I saw it today here on X but don’t remember who it was.
Petrol prices:
February, 2026: R20.10
October, 2026: R30.25
Diesel Prices:
February, 2026: R17:92
October, 2026: R31.95
Guys, in which world is this sustainable? Since Feb, Diesel has gone up by a staggering R14. Petrol has gone up by R10.
This is not normal. This is not sustainable. Something must give!
PICTURES | 8TH SOCIAL JUSTICE SUMMIT
MEC of Finance, @DungaLeko, is participating in the 8th Social Justice Summit at Stellenbosch University, contributing to discussions on fiscal capacity and social justice.
The session examines whether South Africa’s fiscal framework adequately supports constitutional transformation and explores innovative approaches to financing inclusive development and advancing social justice.
#GrowingGautengTogether
Day 1 of 8th Social Justice Summit and I chaired a panel discussion with Gauteng Finance MEC Nkululeko Dunga and Independent Finance Expert Dr Patience Mbava, on municipal finance (in)capacity.
In our attempts to achieve the creation of a more just and equitable society, we must provide adequate financing. Better funded municipalities enable the realisation of our best aspirations. They’re in all our interests and enable human & socio-economic development.
We will get there, we will get them, together. 🫶🏾🇿🇦
🚨WeBuyCars JUST LOST R12.9 BILLION IN MARK VALUE IN ONE YEAR‼️‼️‼️📉
South Africa’s biggest second-hand car dealer has gone from market darling to struggling stock in the space of 12 months unbelievable‼️
The share price dropped 54.3%. That took the company’s value from R23.75 billion down to R10.85 billion a R12.9 billion loss for shareholders ‼️
They still move roughly 15,500 cars a month through their supermarkets buying pods and auctions the business is big 20 supermarkets of used vehicles over 15,000 parking bays and 3,700 staff but the numbers are no longer looking healthy.
Latest results showed revenue up 7.8% to R14.2 billion, yet profits went horrible backwards. “EBITDA” and headline earnings both fell drastically margins are under pressure for the group‼️
The main problem⁉️ “Cheap new Chinese cars” are pulling buyers out of the used market people who would normally have paid R140k–R180,000 for a used car, are now looking at new cheap Chinese models instead and that hits WeBuyCars hard because their average selling price sits around R148,000‼️
There are also growing complaints about vehicle quality and after-sales service when customers start doubting what they’re getting, it becomes harder to charge the margins the business needs.
It wasn’t always like this. The company grew fast after listing in April 2024🔥 The share price ran from R20.50 to nearly R60 in the first 15 months then the momentum died Ramaphosa allowed a influx of China 🇨🇳 crap‼️
Some analysts still think the worst is priced in and that earnings can recover once inventory levels stabilise and they fill the bays they’ve built. Others are more cautious, pointing to the weak economy, high interest rates and the Chinese competition that isn’t going away ‼️
⌛️Either way, WeBuyCars has gone from the clear winner in the used-car space to a company fighting to prove its model still works⁉️⁉️⁉️🛩️
It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish.
We will be in Kariega (formerly Uitenhage) in Tamboville, to wrap up a good campaign in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

The Taxes you pay in South Africa:
1. Fuel levy
2. RAF Levy
3. Electricity surcharges,
4. property rates & taxes
5. Transfer Duty
6. VAT on everything
7. Capital Gains Tax
9. Income tax
Generally, I dont like complaining and whining about paying tax because, well, the government has to run programmes and the money has to come from somewhere.
But im increasingly getting uneasy, not only because this is a bit too much tax, but also because we dont get much in return. Some Europeans pay much more tax than us, but it is in return for free and well-functioning schools, hospitals and transport system.
After all these, I still have to pay medical aid and private school fees for 4 children. Im increasingly getting very edgy about all these.
