Since their announcement of ending physical media by January 2028, and Sony have been exposed and/or accused of various despicable behaviors🚀

✅Pretending physical media is obsolete in order to justify starting a monopoly, and ending second hand market and player ownership

✅Implementing regional pricing which will likely end up making games even more expensive

✅Depriving over %60 of countries in the world from video games, as more than %60 don’t have a dedicated PlayStation Store, and/or no reliable internet to experience games properly

✅Accused of engineering data that includes DLC, MTX and free to play/digital only games among the comparison of physical vs. digital to pretend that the demand for digital is much higher than it is

✅Accused of using bots to defend digital-only on social media

✅Lack of respect for fans by showing they’re above addressing players directly and that players will come along eventually and profits from digital only will compensate for those who leave

✅Reported to be tightly controlling their own employees regarding addressing anything to fans about physical media

✅Using their sick puppet media to disingenuously interpret unverified and engineered data to defend Sony’s move

Whether all of these turn out to be too true or not is yet to be seen, but Sony’s reputation is the lowest ever and the lack of communication is building up immense resentment towards them. Which is a far cry from how they used to be the darling of the industry.

This isn’t a smear campaign nor libel, nor a push for harassing studios, but you can’t treat gamers like children and expect them to spend like adults unquestioned.

You cannot put too many roadblocks in someone’s hobby and suck the soul out of it, and show total hubris, apathy and disrespect expect no reaction from dedicated supporters who have been there for 30 years

We've seen Alanah Pearce' comment about Sony putting out a gagging order on its employees. And it is very telling for what is going on!

First, we can say that it checks out with what we have heard from behind the scenes. Initially there were a lot of discussions about Sony's attack on physical media. Then, several days after the announcement the chats just went quiet over night. Nobody even reacted to the topic or things remotely connected to it anymore. Like they were all struck by a giant censorship hammer.

In our opinion, this clearly shows several things.

One, Sony desperately wants to control the narrative. They anticipated the backlash. They fear the backlash.

Subsequently, two, this proves that they don't have a leg to stand on. Their justification for the move to kill physical media and push everyone into an all-digital dystopia is not based on reality. The reason they gave is bogus. We already talked about this before when we looked at the numbers and explained that the bigger picture is much more than "consumer trends".

But the most important thing is, three, that they know killing physical media will literally hurt everyone in and around the games industry in some way. EVERBODY has a good reason to be angry and concerned. Retailers have already spoken up. Developers have already spoken up (not only because the backlash harms their marketing, but because it harms motivation, discoverability and an additional stream of revenue), preservationists have spoken up, media has spoken up, gamers have spoken up.

The only thing that carries Sony is a large part of the audience that hasn't gotten the message yet. But more and more do. Once a critical mass of casual gamers understand that Sony will exploit them even more for profit in the future, that this decision will come with severe downsides even for those who didn't care before, it can turn the tide.

This message control wouldn't be necessary, if their decision would be for the better. In that case, they could easily justify it in public. But they do the opposite. That's all you need to know to continue the backlash and make as many people as you can aware of the consequences.

three weeks since the disc announcement. sony has said nothing. the community's answer:

- the petition just crossed 336,000 signatures. slower now, but climbing every day
- community notes follow sony's posts like a shadow
- comments demanding discs outnumber the likes under sony's own posts
- the wolverine trailer: 12,000+ comments, the vast majority about discs
- even the ps plus cancellation threats changed nothing. analysts' verdict: sony "will not reverse" - digital is "just too lucrative"

sony's playbook is obvious: say nothing, wait for exhaustion.

the flaw: every new post resets the clock. each trailer, each promo - a fresh referendum.

sony went quiet to avoid saying the wrong thing.
community notes now say it for them.

Physical is actually a much bigger deal in the anime world. The Blu-ray version is often actually a better-quality show with new animation that never gets streamed. Also, a lot of anime will never stream again and unless you buy the discs you won't have legal access again.
