Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made a false claim in his testimony to the House on Wednesday. Then he repeated it in his testimony to the Senate on Thursday.

Hegseth said Wednesday: “In 2024, troops were depl… – that was Joe Biden by the way, Joe Biden –  were deployed to polling locations in 15 states." He continued, "2024 – Joe Biden – troops deployed to polling locations in 15 states. Explain that one to me.”

Here’s the explanation: Hegseth’s claim isn't true.

Not only were all National Guard activations for the 2024 election done by individual states rather than Biden, all 11 states that responded to my inquiries said *no troops* there were sent to polling places.

Rather, they said, Guard personnel were in other locations helping with election cybersecurity, doing other behind-the-scenes support work, or not actually activated for the election after all.

President Trump’s speech to the UN was one of those “where do you even start” addresses from a fact-check perspective. Here’s a non-comprehensive look at some of his claims:

Inflation hasn't been "defeated" by Trump; it's been rising since the spring and is now, at 2.9%, just shy of the 3.0% from when he returned to office in January, when he says he inherited an “economic calamity.”

US electricity bills aren’t “coming way down”; they’re spiking, rising at double the rate of overall inflation. Grocery prices aren't "down” either; they're up during this presidency and they jumped last month at the fastest pace since 2022.

Trump didn't end a “raging” war between Egypt and Ethiopia because the two countries were not in a war at all; they’re in an argument over a dam that is ongoing. He’s previously claimed he stopped Serbia and Kosovo from starting a new war, not that he resolved an existing war, which makes more sense because they weren’t at war under Trump, either. And the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo hasn’t ended despite the Trump administration-brokered June peace deal, which, critically, didn’t involve the rebel coalition doing the fighting.

Trump’s current poll numbers aren’t close to his highest ever. Trump’s “$17 trillion” investment figure is $8 trillion higher than the figure his own press secretary used *yesterday.* President Biden didn’t let in 25 million migrants. Biden didn’t lose 300,000 kids.

Global warming isn’t a “hoax.” Scientists haven’t ceased using the phrase “global warming.” Coal isn’t “clean.” The US didn’t have to pay “$1 trillion” under the Paris climate accord. That the wind sometimes doesn’t blow doesn’t make wind power useless; batteries exist, and wind is used as part of a mix of power sources. China doesn’t “barely” use wind energy; in fact it’s by far the world’s leading user of wind power, and it’s rapidly building more domestic capacity.

President Trump keeps repeating debunked lies. Here’s a fact check of 10 he repeated in the last week alone.

There can’t possibly be a 1,500% reduction in drug prices. The US hasn’t sent Ukraine $350 billion in wartime aid. Trump’s dam-opening in January didn’t send extra water to Los Angeles (and California’s water flows aren’t controlled by a single “valve”). The US is far from the only country that uses mail-in ballots. There is inflation in the United States. There hasn’t been $1.99 gas anywhere in the US when Trump has claimed there has been. Trump didn’t sign any law giving automatic 10-year sentences to monument vandals. Biden was the legitimate winner of the 2020 election. Biden didn’t let South Korea stop covering part of the cost of the US military presence there. A camera didn’t catch Gov. The FBI is knocking down two fake videos circulating online claiming that the FBI issued warnings about terrorist threats at polling sites and reports of voting in swing state prisons were fabricated, the agency said in a statement.
