This is Sean Rad.

He built Tinder, a $42B+ company, fought and won a lawsuit against one of the most powerful men in the world, and made a company so good everyone knows what the words “swipe right” means.

I sat down with him to steal his homework on building companies that outlast you:

1. Relentless focused attention is hard to beat.

When you sit down with Sean he is nowhere else, focused, insanely curious, and thinks in step functions. I can see how focus is a superpower if we can mimic his. Be present.

2. ”Culture sounds fluffy but makes money.”

Sean says past 10 people in a company, culture matters almost more than product. Faster you grow, harder it is. Obsess on how people explain your company to others and you’ll win more.

3. ”Own your company language or others will rent it for you.”

At Tinder he never let anyone call it a “hook-up app” or a “dating app” because he believed it was more than that.

4. “Love others and you get love back… you can still be a warrior and win if you start with love.”

Alright, stay with me. Love-talk in business used to creep me out. BUT - the way he talked about going head to head with Barry Dillon, who would intimidate any normal human, he said, “Nights when it was tough and scary, I didn’t think about going to war with Barry. I thought about protecting our employees who deserved the money earned for all their hard work.” Love > Greed.

5. “Create a category and everyone else becomes a feature update not a product.”

If you think about it, every competitor to Tinder (Hinge, Bumble, Grindr etc) are all like “Tinder but X" …which explains why Tinder is 2-10x bigger than all the rest. Much easier to win big on innovation than iteration.

6. “Once you earn a lot, you have a responsibility to give a lot.”

You wouldn’t know it because Sean is private, but he donates in BIG ways to big causes. He also funds tiny lil coffee shops and burger joints just because he loves business. I have so much more respect for a billy who doesn’t just count his bank account.

7. “If you are going to do anything even materially interesting, expect massive pushback. The only way you carve a new path is by getting hit in the face with branches.”

That tracks.
