DEFUNDING JOURNALS WILL ALSO HELP PREVENT FUTURE LAB GENERATED PANDEMICS

The current scientific publishing system has repeatedly rewarded scientists for conducting increasingly transgressive experiments that push ethical and biosafety boundaries. When top journals choose to publish studies describing the reconstruction of the 1918 influenza virus or the "supercharging" of the H5N1 avian influenza virus, they signal to other scientists that such experiments are not only acceptable but worthy of the scientific community's highest recognition. This creates incentives for other researchers to perform even more transgressive experiments to advance their careers.

This is why I believe defunding the current scientific journal system (which the NIH could do through a simple policy change) should be an important part of any effort to prevent future lab-generated pandemics.

We don't need journals to disseminate scientific information anymore; preprint servers can fulfill that function. So, if preprint servers have eliminated the need for journals to communicate scientific findings, what purpose do journals serve today? If their principal function is to confer prestige on scientists rather than to disseminate science, is that function aligned with the purpose of scientific research itself?

In loving and respectful memory

Warner was an immense soul.

He feared nothing and fought for freedom.

He didn’t keyboard complain.
He acted with precision, concentrated focus and infective optimism.
Intellectual Fecundity that invoked many to mimic his general heading.

He had a strong principled basis for gaining karmic momentum.

He didn’t waste time in the drama hot tub and wisely stayed focused on much more productive endeavors.

The humility of wisdom embodied Warner.

He drove an underground legal movement and gave voice to millions of people who witnessed traditional law firms distance themselves from off narrative cases.

I don’t think people understand his impact here as it’s not glamorized on X but instead in the Court.

I have many regrets hearing of his passing:(

I mostly think of the things I dreamed we were certain to celebrate in the future together regarding all the collective victories of the fascinating people who stood up to the COVID cartel.

Warner had big wins but he was correct to remind people to honor the Small wins too.

Legal precedent set.

Make them say it on the record with a Bible in their hand!

Fight even if you know you’re going to lose because that’s what the world needs.

I don’t ,today, know what those future victories would be but I’ve known enough people that dent the universe to know Warner wasn’t just one of them. He was uniquely effective because he was ethically correct in his mission.

Many people dent the universe and then discover they are nothing. Rudderless. Hollow, money seeking misguided, no philosophical grounding and ego engorged.

Warner found his North Star first and when he dented the universe he was comfortable with mortality.

That’s the victory lap we should all be singing in his name.

I will never forget getting on a long flight from NL->Boston and being sick as a dog (hacking all over @JesslovesMJK) and deciding to carry on to OH the next day.

Family was telling me I’m nuts. Cancel.

But Warner was like a brother I couldn’t let down and he’d forgive me for burning the candle at both ends.

A significant regret is not singing his praises more loudly in life.

Peter Hotez is being accused of sexually misconduct after he allegedly pursued a Northwell Health scientist that ended up rejecting him.

Annette Lee says Hotez, who is married, proposition her repeatedly.

In Lee’s wrongful termination lawsuit she says, "Dr. Hotez told me he would give up all these women for me and I declined and said I did not want to be more than friends and said that I did not want a sexual relationship."

She was later terminated from her job of over 20 years and is now suing in federal court.

Hotez is denying her “characterization of the facts.”
