It’s been clear since for a while that TV’s evolution from linear to digital was not going smoothly. Since February, @LaneBrown and I have been digging into the story of how it all went awry, why those who make TV are so angry, and what comes next. https://t.co/VCguQwO6n6
I talked to @embassydavies and execs from Sony+ Disney about their plan to keep @Jeopardy thriving in the streaming era. Are there too many spinoffs? How is the mothership doing on Hulu and Peacock? And what's the plan for Jeopardy IRL? Up now at @vulture:

NEW: Thanks to the unlikely combination of LOVE ISLAND and the FIFA World Cup, Peacock had a Barbenheimer moment in June, notching its most-viewed month ever. Powering its surge: Gen Z viewers, who flocked to both events in huge numbers. Up now at @vulture https://t.co/TIVeJoUO0n
Viewership drops, C-suite shuffles, fewer hits — are things at Netflix as bad as they seem? “This is a group that’s running out of levers,” says one TV exec. Joe Adalian digs into the panic swirling around the streamer. https://t.co/R8tymiILAY
There's been a ton of chatter in recent weeks about Netflix's supposed engagement issues and its lack of 2026 hits. I talked to several H'wood insiders about the suddenly negative narrative for the latest #Buffering. Up now at @vulture:

"What seems more likely is that Weiss’s loudest critics are correct and that her goal is exactly what Pelley feared: She’s there to murder 60 MINUTES as we’ve known it because some very powerful people want it dead."
My take on the mess at CBS News:

NBC has greenlit FOUR new shows for the 2026-’27— two dramas and two comedies.
DRAMAS: The Rockford Files (starring Angel from ANGEL), Line of Fire (Peter Krause)
COMEDIES: Newlyweds (Tea Leoni, Tim Daly), Nick Miller P.I. (aka Sunset P.I.)
We’ve known for decades that CNN would be the first sentence of Ted Turner’s obituary. But he did far more than start a news channel: He shaped the whole cable business, and with it, a big chunk of our culture. My appreciation of an icon over at @vulture:

I talked to @AGomezFCC and former FCC chief counsel @CornRevere about Brendan Carr's ridiculous attempt today to silence ABC and @jimmykimmel. The good news is: Experts think Disney will easily win this fight.

First on @vulture: Season two of POP CULTURE @Jeopardy has a premiere date, a new format—and something very different for Netflix: A daily release pattern. New eps will drop Monday-Friday. My report: https://t.co/KMmZyzkhyA
This broke earlier today in my BUFFERING newsletter, but is now live on @vulture: This weekend's #SNLUK will stream on Peacock much earlier than last week's premiere. Here's why, plus why the first ep didn't go up until 9 p.m. Sunday

Hurting the comparisons: This year's Oscarcast came after Daylight Saving Time had started; last year's was before. And the World Baseball Classic is massive this year-- it drew over 7M viewers on FS1, sources say.
As I reported at BlueSky:
ABC hasn't issued an official release yet, but per one studio source, the show drew 17.9M viewers, down from last year's (non-Big Data-measured) 19.69M viewers. It's the lowest since 2022's show, which did 16.6M, but still a very solid number in 2026
When Ellison says Casey Bloys and HBO will be given the “resources and independence to do what it does best,” the obvious next questions are: How does he define the “what they do” part? And will it be enough to keep the current HBO brain trust in place?

“At a time when the president and his cronies have embarked on a bid to make the country less democratic and less pluralistic, a media company that has shown a clear willingness to align itself with that mission is about to get dramatically bigger."

The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice (and networks listening to me…eventually)
THE MUPPET SHOW, exec produced by a Jason Segel co-star, airs tonight on ABC and is streaming now on @DisneyPlus
"The only actual new ideas Weiss has brought are that 'woke' is bad — and that she knows best." Some thoughts on Bari Weiss's Tuesday town hall and how her flagship broadcast has seriously underplayed what happened this weekend in MSP, now at @vulture:

In fact, ABC WORLD NEWS TONIGHT had its biggest audience Monday since April 2020, when COVID news prompted ratings surges.
So while CBS's number is accurate, and sampling is sampling, it's not the flex CBS thinks it is: WORLD NEWS benefited even more from NBC's absence.
Specifically, ABC's WORLD NEWS TONIGHT added nearly 3 million viewers Monday vs. its recent averages, jumping to 10.9 million viewers. It was a busy news day and with no NBC NIGHTLY NEWS, the other two newscast divided the audience.

Monday was a big night for viewers to sample @tonydokoupil's new "CBS Evening News:" With NBC's newscast preempted due to NBA 🏀, CBS netted 6.4 million viewers, up from 4.2 mil last week. CBS says it was the newscast's highest-rated day since 2021. ABC's newscast also benefited.
