Okay I'm back. The High Court found Mahungela guilty of murder, kidnapping, attempted rape and defeating the administration of justice. Here's my post-verdict behavioral analysis, particularly on one of the most psychologically interesting aspects of the case:
My aunt had a rule when it came to lending money to family:
"I will help you once. After that, you're on your own."
Most of us thought it was cruel.
Then my two cousins hit hard times within the same year.
The first cousin lost his job unexpectedly. He called my aunt in tears, and she transferred him $3,000 that same day.
Six months later, he called again. He needed another $2,000.
She said no.
The family was furious.
"He's trying."
"He's family."
"How can you help once and then abandon him?"
My aunt didn't change her mind.
A few months later, my other cousin called.
She had never asked anyone for anything in her life. She'd worked two jobs through college, paid her own rent, and always seemed to have everything under control.
She asked my aunt for $3,000.
My aunt said yes immediately.
The family exploded.
"So the rule only applies to some people?"
My aunt said,
"I have a boyfriend" doesn't stop them.
"I’m married" doesn't stop them.
However, “I love luxury and expensive things"
that one clears the room every time.
