I wasn’t ready to be your father, so I did what I had to, to not let you down.

@OfAveryBlood Looking up from the chair in the corner of the room, he turned the photograph of her mother upside down so she wouldn’t see it. Then he tried to plant a smile on his face to hide his grief. “What is it, sweetheart?”
@OfAveryBlood He was lucky to notice his own appearance, let alone hers. But after a few minutes, he wandered back to the stairs and picked the photo back up, then he headed up the stairs to his own bedroom.
@OfAveryBlood Lucky for her, he was too busy downing his drink to notice what she’d been about to say. Setting the glass down, he moved over to kiss her head. “I’m glad, now go get some sleep, honey. It’s late.”
@OfAveryBlood He simply nodded again, before pouring himself a large glass of whiskey. “Did you have fun?” He still hadn’t really even looked up, so he wouldn’t have noticed.
@OfAveryBlood “What’s wrong, honey? Shouldn’t you be asleep?” He called from the stairs before setting the photo down by the front door and heading back through to the kitchen.
@OfAveryBlood After a while, he eventually opened his eyes. Still holding the photo in his grasp, he got up off the couch and moved to head up the stairs to his bedroom, despite how empty that room felt with his wife’s absence.
@OfAveryBlood Rolling over after she came in, he continued holding the photo close to his body but he remained fast asleep even as she shut the front door and headed upstairs.
@OfAveryBlood By the time she came back, he was fast asleep on the couch, with the photo still in his arms. And it was clear that he had fallen asleep crying and grieving for his wife.
@OfAveryBlood “Have fun on your walk.” He murmured, before lying down with the photo close to his chest and his arms wrapped around it once she was gone.
@OfAveryBlood He wouldn’t have agreed, if he’d been focused on her properly. “Don’t stay out too late, honey.” He called back and moved to sit down on the sofa with the photo.
@OfAveryBlood He was too distracted by his grief, by the photograph of his wife, to listen to her properly. “Take a jacket, sweetheart. And keep the babies warm.”
