Choosing which historical figures to commemorate is a challenge both at home and abroad.

Ty Seidule argues for the idea of "primary legacy," which creates space for people like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, both critical figures to the Republic.

But the primary legacy for Confederate General Robert E. Lee means that he should not be honoured in the same way, given his undeniable advocacy for perpetuating a enslaved population.
