Two requests this Holst birthday weekend. Please consider joining the Holst Society as a member and please always enthusiastically help promote and support new research into Holst, for example by contributing to Bruno's fundraiser detailed below.
Happy Birthday #GustavHolst150, born #otd 1874 @HolstMuseum #Cheltenham. Congratulations to everyone there for a weekend of celebrations, and looking forward to continuing to appreciate RVW’s « great composer, great teacher and great friend. »
Happy birthday to an amazing human being, teacher, composer, friend and sage on his 150th birthday. What would he have to say of the world today? The state of the Arts, education, performance and society? We can but guess. Happy Birthday dear Gustav Holst. Your legacy lives on.
💿 We’ve had a great weekend recording the music of Gustav Holst!
It was fabulous to team up Adam and everyone at World of Sound again and it was a delight to have Martyn Brabbins back conducting the band in Holst’s iconic Moorside Suite.
GustavHolst’s hit Sanskrit #OperaSynopsisInATweet: When Death arrives to claim the life of the woodman Satyavan his wife Savitri persuades Death that life is impossible without her husband, thereby defeating Death, who departs. Poster @HolstMuseum
It’s a string thing 🎻
Holst’s The Planets is FULL of memorable moments for all sections of the orchestra, but the strings do often come out on top 😜
Here’s one of our favourite string moments from Venus 🌟
We are deeply saddened to hear that Sir Andrew Davis has died. Past Chief Conductor and Conductor Laureate of the BBC SO, and President of the BBC Symphony Chorus. A vital force in British music for many decades and a friend to us all. He will be greatly missed.
Born #otd composer, conductor& educator #ImogenHolst. She devoted much of her later life to the music of her father Gustav, pictured here with her. For his centenary in 1974 she spearheaded the thematic catalogue of his music @FaberMusic & opened @HolstMuseum Cheltenham
18 April — Celebrating #Holst150 with his extraordinary choral works and music by @G_E_Mason @EPerivolaris Urmas Sisask and Charles Villiers Stanford. Harpist Olivia Jageurs joins us for ‘Choral Hymns from the Riga Veda’ (set 3) and her arrangement of ‘Venus’ from ‘The Planets’.
Hurray and thanks to everyone @HolstMuseum Cheltenham for all their hard work for the 2024 celebrations. These include two exhibitions, so lots to enjoy with people sharing their knowledge from around the world - literally thanks to exceptional help from @UniMelb Library.
It's composer #GustavHolst's 149th birthday! 🎉🎉
This is my own arrangement and performance of a neglected piece of his from 1911.
Here's to many more new performances and recordings, and here's to some appropriately Holstian programming for his 150th at the 2024 Proms!
Happy 149th Birthday #GustavHolst, born #OTD 1874. Seen here with his beloved composer daughter Imogen in 1921, their joy in each other’s company clear to see. Bravo @RCMLondon for premiering Imogen’s Iken fanfare 6 pm today. Looking forward to 2024 and #GustavHolst150
On this week’s episode of LPO Offstage, LPO players Francis Bucknall, Anne McAneney and Rachel Masters take a deep dive into The Planets with our host @yolandabrown 🌟 Listen to the episode now.
