Here’s my NOT a review of #Supergirl, but an autopsy of why it failed.

First, it’s a girl boss movie in an era where the market for that got saturated post Harvey Weinstein. It’s started with Lady Ghostbusters 10 years ago and Hollywood just can’t accept that Fetch just isn’t going to happen.

James Gunn spent years telling everyone that DC Studios would not greenlight a movie until the script was finished and good enough to shoot.

He then praised the SUPERGIRL script as something that went above and beyond his expectations.

Now the movie is here, and one of the biggest complaints is the writing.

Critics are calling it derivative, formulaic, unimaginative and far too eager to imitate the same superhero movies Gunn is currently criticizing for being “really lazy.”

That quote could not have arrived at a worse time.

When you run the studio, you do not get to stand outside the conversation and criticize the genre like an independent filmmaker anymore. Every standard you establish for everyone else immediately becomes the standard applied to your own movies.

Maybe Gunn genuinely loved the script. Maybe the problems emerged during production. Maybe audiences and critics simply disagree with his taste.

But he cannot spend years promising finished scripts, attacking lazy superhero storytelling and then act surprised when people use SUPERGIRL as the rebuttal.

That is the downside of being the boss.

Everything James Gunn says can and will be used against him in the court of public opinion.

Did SUPERGIRL meet the standard Gunn created, or expose how subjective that standard always was?

Ya, happened with Superman too. He was too "WOkE!" & WEaK! Same dudes dog piled it, Fox News HATED it, again on Political lines + Snyder Freaks tried hard to bring it down, couldn't. Ignore the 1's & 10's, look at unweighted at 5.7 which is mass audience. Our Score: 4/10 range.
