NOTES
* ONTO THE SHIP!
N. Reading 9, Hawks 6. Our guys never stopped fighting and competed until the final out. Thank you to our six seniors: Austin, AJ, Declan, Jacoby, Kevin, and Xavier. You left ET Baseball better than you found it, and your impact on this program will be felt for years to come.
Top '27 NHL draft prospect Carter Meyer has requested a release from the USNTDP and informed USA Hockey that he won’t return.
Meyer is a BU commit who’s CHL rights are held by the Quebec Remparts where his brother Freddy plays. Their father is former NHL’er Freddy Meyer.
“It’s not necessarily about the money… it’s about what the money represents”
Really interesting take from college hockey insider @MikeMcMahonCHN on the impact NIL money is having on college hockey.
A few years ago my Cornell teammates and I went back for a reunion to honor Mike Schafer, our head coach’s last home game before retirement after 30 years. We had a blast, and one of the really interesting conversations centered around the transfer portal. Back then, nobody really transferred because you had to sit out a year. Now - it’s the wild west.
One of the guys posed the question - if there was no transfer penalty, would you have transferred?
Some guys said no, but a few guys said they probably would have as they didn’t play much their first few years or they thought they were being coached too hard.
But all of us agreed, that knowing what we know now, we are SO GLAD that we didn’t have the opportunity to jump. The bonds we built wouldn't have happened. The hard coaching we had, we were just being held accountable and at some point we figured out it was what we needed to get better.
I’m sure the transfer portal has been a good thing for some players, but it sucks that so many of them going through college hockey today jump because it’s hard instead of persevering through. Or jump and don’t get the experience of truly developing bonds with the same teammates for the full allotment of years they have.
Those are things that made my college experience so amazing. It’s what makes college hockey so special. And I hope that more players learn to value that in their own college experience.
On hockey and age-based admission:
I had this in the newsletter a few weeks ago. More than 80% of college hockey freshmen last year were junior age-outs (20+ years old).
409 out of 509 players.
Hawks get a W v. Manchester-Essex. Moms & those fighting breast cancer were honored; plus coaches Justin & Charlie Bilton faced off yet again. Jacoby CT had the first ever out of the park home run at ET, a grand slam. @ETAthletics@MattWilliams_SN@GlobeSchools@BrianRoachJr
