If you’re buying a used vehicle in this country with over 150,000 km on it, please don’t just buy it and start driving.

First things first: service the transmission, change the engine oil and filter, change the transfer case and differential fluids if it’s AWD/4WD, flush the coolant if it’s due, inspect the tires and replace them if necessary, check the brakes, and get a proper wheel alignment. Then give the entire vehicle a thorough inspection and service.

And please, don’t take anybody’s word for it. Everybody selling a used car will tell you, “Oh, I already changed that” or “It was recently serviced.” Unless there are actual maintenance records or receipts showing when the work was done, assume it hasn’t been done and budget accordingly.

You can’t replace everything on a used vehicle, obviously, but when you’re buying something with 150,000+ km, take care of the important fluids, brakes, tires, and maintenance items first. That little money you spend upfront could save you from a very expensive repair later.
