SHOW YOUR LOVE! A Happy Heavenly Birthday to Shock G of the Digital Underground. There are some artists that fully understand that it's not just the music, but the character and the viral marketing of the music. Before viral marketing was even a tagline. The greats understood how it worked. Shock G was one of the true originators in the hip hop world. There will never be another. He would have been 63 today.
The Bay Area is currently among the safest regions in the United States of America.
The talking points about SF being a hellhole or Oakland being a failed city are untrue.
San Francisco has had 17 homicides this year. Making it safe by even European-city standards.
Oakland is projected to be at less than 50 for the year. (Lowest in history of Oakland)
San Jose is at 16 with a population of over 1 million people.
Property crime is lower too. Back in 2021, San Francisco had the highest property crime rate in the United States. And the highest auto burglary rate on earth. Now it doesn’t.
The right wingers are lying to you.
That is all.
"Straight Outta Compton" is the opening track and title song of N.W.A.'s groundbreaking debut album. While the album did not invent gangsta rap, it played a crucial role in bringing the genre from the underground into the mainstream, with its uncompromising depiction of life in South Central Los Angeles.
Released in August 1988, Straight Outta Compton became a landmark of hip-hop despite receiving very little mainstream radio airplay because of its explicit lyrics and controversial subject matter. The album was eventually certified triple Platinum by the RIAA in the United States and became one of the most influential hip-hop records of its era. Its enduring legacy inspired the 2015 biographical film Straight Outta Compton, directed by F. Gary Gray, which dramatized the rise of N.W.A. and the creation of the album.
35 years ago today, Cypress Hill released their self-titled debut album on Ruffhouse/Columbia. most of the album was put together from a few different demos they had recorded during the late 1980s. and even though a lot of the joints were recorded in 1988 and 1989, they still sound ahead of their time and straight-up revolutionary. Muggs was a pioneer, using samples from soul, rock, jazz, and blues and layering them like a mad scientist. definitely influenced by the Bomb Squad and Ultramagnetic, Muggs’ shit was dustier and dirtier. he was able to take the template created by his influences and successfully build upon it. aggressive, uncompromised hip-hop music, filled with realistic takes on life in the streets of South-Central Los Angeles in the late 1980s/ early 1990s. certified double platinum and went Gold within six months of its release. a masterpiece.
STREET FIGHTER II: THE ANIMATED MOVIE (1994) still goes unbelievably hard.
One of the rare video game adaptations that actually feels like the game got a movie worthy of it.
The Shamen - LSI (Love Sex Intelligence) (#TOTP 1992)
One of the defining tracks of the UK's early 90s acid house scene. Complemented by a soulful lead vocal by Jhelisa Anderson, the song was lifted as the lead single from their classic fifth album, Boss Drum. Went to #6 in UK.
This is the greatest Kruk and Kuip sequence for me. It perfectly encapsulates the fun and humor these 2 brought into our homes every night. Together for 32 years they were more than just broadcasters, they were a part of our family. Thanks for all the memories Mike Krukow. 🧡🖤
Released in 1987 as a single from Eric B. & Rakim’s debut album of the same name, “Paid in Full” became a golden-age hip-hop classic. It showcased Rakim’s pioneering complex internal rhyme schemes (with a jazz-influenced, laid-back flow) over a sample-heavy production.
