As medical professionals warn the Government about the unknown risks of excessive screen time in schools, one thing is clear: research must be at the heart of education policy.
@helenhayes_, Labour MP and chair of the committee, highlighted the “lack of a rigorous framework for the use of these technologies in education,” reinforcing the need for pioneering research to help ensure every child gets the best possible start in life.
Shadow Education Secretary @LauraTrottMP has raised similar warnings, urging that we must not repeat past mistakes by rushing screens into classrooms and for homework without solid evidence to support their use.
At the University of East London, @ISEY_uel is leading groundbreaking research into how young minds are shaped at various stages and across diverse environments. Recently, ISEY has contributed to the Government’s new guidance on screen use for under-fives.
It’s not just about how long children spend on screens, but what they watch, how they engage, and how digital experiences shape their attention, learning, and development.
This is why ISEY has been shortlisted for Research Project of the Year 2027: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the #THEAwards @timeshighered.
Progressing our understand from just limiting screen time, our researchers combine developmental neuroscience with wearable sensors in homes and nurseries. This lets them study directly how the fast pacing and design of digital media affect early brain development, attention spans, speech, and stress regulation, turning complex science into practical advice that protects children's learning and wellbeing.
