In a special interview for Overdo, Zhang Linghe shared that the first thing that drew him to the script was its incredibly tight pacing. Every episode, every scene and every clue is connected. Missing even one part could make it difficult to understand what happens next.

Just when one conflict seems to be over and the story is about to calm down, another one immediately erupts. From the moment he began reading the script, Zhang Linghe found himself completely absorbed in it.

But the person he spent the most time trying to understand was undoubtedly Murong Qingyi.

Unlike Zhang Linghe himself, who usually prefers to handle situations calmly, Qingyi expresses his emotions in a much more intense and decisive way. At first, there were some of Qingyi’s reactions that Zhang Linghe could not fully understand. Yet once he truly entered the character’s world, those same scenes became deeply satisfying to perform.

To find the emotional foundation of Murong Qingyi, Zhang Linghe did not focus only on the man Qingyi had become. He went back to the character’s childhood, his family background and the environment in which he grew up.

He believes that a person’s earliest experiences shape their personality. Therefore, even when certain parts of Qingyi’s past were not clearly written in the script, Zhang Linghe imagined and pieced them together himself. Only after building a solid emotional history could Qingyi’s choices, reactions and feelings as an adult become convincing.

Behind the image of a stubborn and seemingly unrestrained young master, Murong Qingyi is actually someone who has endured far too much.

As a child, he did not receive enough love from his parents and grew up within a tragic family. Even after becoming an adult and appearing to have achieved something in life, he continued to be pushed into one painful situation after another.

What Zhang Linghe values most about Qingyi, however, is that he never allows the injustice he has suffered—or the extreme actions he has witnessed—to destroy his true nature.

After everything, Qingyi still learns how to use love to reach the person standing before him, as well as others who are suffering just as he has suffered.

That is extraordinarily rare and difficult—and perhaps the very reason his story is so heartbreaking.

When discussing the most challenging scenes, Zhang Linghe highlighted two in particular.

The first is the moment Qingyi is forced to choose between the woman he loves most and someone closest to him. He points a gun at Susu and is trapped in an impossible situation. In the end, he lets her leave, but the gunshot also destroys the beautiful memories they once shared.

It is far more than a single action. At that moment, Qingyi is carrying too much love, conflict and pain—feelings that cannot be expressed in words.

The second scene comes when Qingyi reads a letter and looks at the photograph left behind by his elder brother. Zhang Linghe felt that the original setting was not enough to release all of the character’s emotions, so he discussed it with the director and suggested having Qingyi walk outside.

Then the rain began to fall.

In the pouring rain, Qingyi holds his brother’s photograph and drops to his knees. It is not simply a scene about crying over a loss. It is the moment when all his suppressed grief, longing and helplessness finally find a way out.

The interview also revealed how Zhang Linghe’s understanding of acting has changed over time.

He admitted that he once had a tendency to become emotionally moved by his own performance while acting. Later, he realized that an actor’s responsibility is not merely to feel the emotion personally, but to carry that emotion through the camera and guide the audience into the character’s inner world.

In some scenes, the actor may show only 20 percent on the surface while internally operating at 200 percent—or even more. That kind of restraint can sometimes be more difficult and exhausting than a fully explosive emotional scene.

“Murong Qingyi’s cure is love. Zhang Linghe’s cure is… getting a good night’s sleep.”

This interview had plenty of fun moments, but what stayed with me most was the way Zhang Linghe spoke about Murong Qingyi.

At first glance, Qingyi may seem like a carefree, reckless young master—sharp-tongued and somewhat indifferent to everything around him. But the more you understand him, the more you realize that he is deeply emotional and fiercely loyal. He is willing to give so much to the people he loves, whether they are his family, friends, or the woman in his heart.

That is why the message Zhang Linghe would most like to give his character is simple:

“Treat yourself better, and learn to love yourself.”

Qingyi goes through three very different stages in his life.

Three years earlier, he is still young and inexperienced—a boy who has only just begun to understand love. Three years later, after enduring injustice and devastating changes, he becomes far more complicated, disillusioned, and perhaps even a little unhinged. By the time another six years have passed, he finally returns as someone more mature, composed, and steady.

Zhang Linghe admitted that he likes the Qingyi from three years earlier the most. He may not have been mature enough at that time, but there was something soft, vulnerable, and deeply lovable about him—something that naturally made people want to protect him.

Perhaps every side of Qingyi can be traced back to the fact that he received far too little love while growing up. He once believed that surviving alone would be enough. Yet the very thing he lacked most eventually became what he longed for most: love, family, and the feeling of being sincerely chosen by someone.

Qingyi’s growth is therefore also a journey of learning how to love, realizing that he is loved, and finally giving that love back to others.

His feelings for Ren Susu three years earlier resemble the purity and tenderness of first love. But when she later returns under the identity of Fang Mulan, his emotions become a mixture of love and hatred. He can still see traces of Susu in her, yet he cannot understand why she has returned to him in such a painful and unfamiliar way.

Zhang Linghe’s favorite part of their relationship is the period before they meet in person, when they communicate only through letters. At that time, they are free to imagine each other without fear or calculation.

Susu sees in Qingyi a kind of freedom she has never been allowed to experience. Qingyi, meanwhile, feels genuine love for the first time—as though a door that had always remained closed inside his heart has finally been opened.

Qingyi carries many regrets because the people he loves leave him one after another. However, Zhang Linghe does not believe that he truly regrets the choices he made. Given another chance, perhaps he would only wish that he had done a little more to keep them from leaving.

Of course, the interview also had some wonderfully “Zhang Linghe” moments.

While Qingyi needs love in order to heal, Zhang Linghe only needs to sleep until morning to solve… 99 percent of his problems. After learning the tango, he honestly admitted that his “long-neglected limbs” had not improved all that much—although he had begun to wonder whether he might actually be suited to ballroom dancing after all. 😆

When speaking about the future, he did not deny having ambitious goals. He hopes that one day he will win meaningful awards and reach a higher position in his career. But before thinking too far ahead, his closest goal remains the same: to do every drama and every character well, and to see genuine growth in himself after each role.

“For an actor, the character is the standard—the measure of one’s own progress.”

Perhaps that is one of the most admirable things about Zhang Linghe: he has ambition without being impatient, and he holds great dreams while still choosing to move forward steadily, one character at a time.
