Among the pathologies of the UK HE system is the way in which its hypercentralisation deflects responsibility from indivudal VCs. This ability to hide one's failure behind "sector wide" issues, is attractive to not only the greedy and incompetent, but also the cowardly.
A new low. Latest attack on university Humanities & Social Sciences courses comes with England's first African-British Professor of History threatened with redundancy and termination oF university's courses in African history @UWankings @hakimadi1 https://t.co/NHfw7kKkeh
We received an email from @KingsCollegeLon on the 'encouraging news' of #USS valuation.
No mention about wrong #USS assumptions and how these have been reversed thanks to #UCU pressure. Let's remember it - solidarity and well done to everyone striking! #ucuRISING
🚨646 University of York students call for their Vice Chancellor to do more to help settle the dispute.
These students firmly “stand with those participating in the MAB.”

Seeing students continue to stand in solidarity with us is so touching ❤️
Taking action is always a last resort. We've been telling our employers about the crisis in higher education for years now.
It's on @UCEA1 to settle this dispute round the negotiating table. #ucuRISING
Solidarity to all #ucu members for the last five years of fighting and striking - our pressure is working!
The fight on pay, precarity, and inequality goes on #ucuRISING
🚨BREAKING
We can confirm that USS is £7.4bn in surplus, and we are on track to restore UCU members pensions and significantly reduce the cost of their monthly contributions
We’ll use the coming months to ensure employers fulfil their obligations
Your action did this 💪
The Vice-chancellor @EdinburghUni spent £13k on business class flights to represent the university.
He has a £400k salary, same as @KingsCollegeLon's VC.

When your industry structurally depends on people doing more work than they are supposed to, you know something's got to change.
Transport, education, health care... all depend on overtime (paid or unpaid) by the people who work in these sectors.
If five years of industrial action weren't enough, @KingsCollegeLon Staff Survey has just confirmed that KCL workers are overworked and underpaid: 84% of staff believe they do more than is required of them in their jobs and only 39% believe their pay is reasonable.
All migrants, including striking university staff, will bear the burden of these costs. Their fees & their dependents will double. Many unis do not reimburse the costs. It will force people out of the country and certainly off the picket lines. The proposal must be challenged!
