🚨 FIX TIER 6 NEWS 🚨
Tier 6 reform has been passed in the state budget — and UFT members made it happen.
This legislation will allow UFT Tier 6 members to retire at 58 instead of 63 with an unreduced pension. That’s five years earlier than before. A MAJOR step forward for thousands of educators.
This was not by chance. It was not an accident. It happened because members across the city showed up again and again: at rallies, online, on the phones, in emails, on BUSES to ALBANY and in conversations with elected officials. 💪
We made Tier 6 visible. We made it human. We made it loud. And now, we’ve made it real.
There is still more work ahead — including the fight for 55/30 for all Tier 6 members — we’re not done by any means. But this is real progress, translating into an earlier retirement for our members and a stronger financial future. Every UFT member who took action should be proud.
We are not done, this is our spirit as a union. We will keep fighting until we get everything we know we deserve. ✊
REMINDER: Students do not attend school on Thursday, June 4, 2026, in observance of Anniversary Day/Chancellor's Conference Day for staff development.
Schools will continue regular programming on Monday, June 8, 2026.

This Immigrant Heritage Month, we proudly celebrate the mosaic of cultures, languages, traditions, and stories that make up New York City. 🌎❤️
At NYC Public Schools, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
The State has proposed new legislation to extend the class size compliance timeline - what does this mean for UFT educators? Teachers whose classes remain above the new class size limits because of approved hard-to-staff and space exemptions will be eligible for a compensation differential. This will hold the City accountable and make sure our members are treated fairly as the City works towards full compliance. Join UFT leadership for a virtual town hall and learn more on Wednesday, June 3, from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Link in your email to sign up!

The Department of Education has confirmed it needs more time for votes to be counted in the Teachers’ Retirement System election. Each candidate’s tellers (vote counters) will have additional time to count and verify votes.
While this election is administered by the DOE, the UFT is closely monitoring the process and will provide updates as vote tallying moves forward on June 2.
Thanks again to all our members who participated in these elections!

@_slh2 We won't stop. It took 28 years and over 90 fixes to make Tier 4 what it is today. We have the momentum and collective strength we need to keep pushing for 55/30 for all Tier 6 members, and we won’t stop until we win!
🚨 FIX TIER 6 NEWS ‼️ As different aspects of the proposed state budget are being reported in the press, the latest reports say that the budget includes significant progress on Tier 6 reform — and we know that’s because of us. 💪
We’re hearing: 58/30 instead of 63/30 for UFT TRS Tier 6 members! This means retiring five years earlier with an unreduced pension. While the fight for 55 will continue, this would be a big step forward.
Check your email for more details as we wait for the final budget!!
.@UFT President Michael Mulgrew (a critic of mayoral control who thinks it should be abolished) says the two year extension is better than a four year.
@NYCMayor also backed undoing it on the campaign trail, before supporting it as mayor
In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are sharing the story of the UFT’s own Marian Thom (July 28, 1936 - Sept. 4, 2024). Marian was born and raised in Manhattan’s Chinatown. She became a paraprofessional in 1970, a job she held for 36 years. Soon after she joined the union, she helped to organize the UFT Paraprofessionals Chapter. In later years she founded the UFT Asian American Heritage Committee, and as Chair she built up the annual Lunar New Year banquet (coming up this week at a new time to celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month!). Marian is remembered as a passionate advocate for her own community and others, always encouraging people to “stand up and be counted”. She was extremely active in union work in retirement as well. We remember and honor her dedication and legacy!
.@UFT is proud to have fighters like @TishJames in our corner.
As a proud Fort Hamilton HS alum, Attorney General James knows how important our educators are to NYC and is standing up for the funding our schools & students deserve.
