On this day 9 years ago, nearly 50 people demonstrating against the U.S.-installed, post-Maidan coup regime in Kiev were burned alive in the Odessa Trade Union building. The massacre was orchestrated by many reactionary forces including ultranationalists and neo-Nazis, but also included local police and, such is the case for Aleksey Goncharenko, soon-to-be elected European politicians. “Slava Ukraini” — a slogan originated by Stepan Bandera during his collaboration with the Nazis in WWII — and the Ukrainian national anthem can be heard shouted and sung proudly in footage of the horrific event, as living bodies within the building continued to burn. Some of them were minors. By the end of it all 42 people were burned alive and 6 were shot dead.

The massacre has largely been ignored by Western media. On this day, nearly a decade later, we remember Odessa.
