The author of the "Rule Britannia" song was born on this day, 11 September 1700 in Ednam, Roxburghshire.

The song was first performed on 1 August in 1740. It was sung in the masque (a court performance) called "Alfred", about Alfred the Great.

He co-wrote "Alfred" with David Mallet, and Thomson's song "Rule Britannia" was set to music by Thomas Arne.

It was performed at Cliveden, the country home of Frederick, Prince of Wales – the eldest son of George II – to commemorate the accession of George II, and the third birthday of Frederick's daughter, the Princess Augusta. (Frederick pre-deceased his father, and on George II's death, the throne passed to Frederick's eldest son, George III.)

His words, "Rule Britannia! Britannia rule the waves. Britons never, never, never shall be slaves" are not meant to be a boast about things past. The word is not "rules".

Rather the word is "rule". An exhortation for Britons, through our navy, to rise to commanding heights in the world. That is, "to rule".

After this song appeared, Britain did indeed follow that command quite successfully!

This means that "the authority" to decide whether the United Kingdom stays together or splits apart, is not ONLY located in the Scottish demos; it is also located in the British Parliament.

It works like this:

The Voluntary Union is held together by Scots consistently voting to stay part of the Union.

The Unitary State is held together (on behalf of us all - England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales) by the collective British Parliament.

This means that the British Parliament can set whatever requirements it wants in order to maintain the UK's integrity - even in the unlikely event of a majority vote by Scots to split away.

It can do this - it can demand that more than a majority vote to split is required - because its responsibilities go beyond its responsibilities to the Scots alone.

Parliament is responsible for the ENTIRE organism - the entire Unitary State - called the United Kingdom.

Clearly, the Scots are not the only people in this Voluntary Union and Unitary State. They are not the only people whose interests are at stake!

The English, Welsh and Northern Irish all have a stake. They would all be affected if the UK were to break apart.

Therefore, it is for the collective British Parliament, which represents all 4 corners of the UK, to uphold the interests of everyone.

In reality, this means Parliament should not easily allow one part of the UK to kill off the entire organism.

It must always be mindful of its responsibilities and duties to maintain the Unitary State of the United Kingdom on behalf of everyone whom it represents.

It should always avoid endangering the organism, and it should do everything it can to keep it together.

That starts by reminding the SNP that Britain is not only a Voluntary Union, it is also a Unitary State.

👑 CHARLES III PROCLAIMED KING, and SCOTTISH OATH MADE! 👑
Charles became King immediately on the death of his mother, but it was this morning, 10 Sept 2022, at 10am, that the Accession Council was convened to make a formal Proclamation of the death of the monarch and the accession of her successor.

Interestingly, much of the event referred to Scotland.

After making a personal Declaration relating to the death of his mother, Charles takes and subscribes to the Oath relating to the security of the "True Protestant Religion" – which was part of the "Settlement" which had been established by the 1689 Claim of Right and the 1707 Acts of Union.

THE SCOTTISH OATH
This Oath has been taken by every Sovereign at their accession since George l in 1714.

He read aloud the Oath while holding a Bible (pic):

"I, Charles the Third by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of My other Realms and Territories King, Defender of the Faith, do faithfully promise and swear that I shall inviolably maintain and preserve the Settlement of the true Protestant Religion as established by the Laws made in Scotland in prosecution of the Claim of Right and particularly by an Act intituled 'An Act for securing the Protestant Religion and Presbyterian Church Government' and by the Acts passed in the Parliament of both Kingdoms for Union of the two Kingdoms, together with the Government, Worship, Discipline, Rights and Privileges of the Church of Scotland. So help me God."

Charles then signed two identical Instruments recording the taking of this Oath, which are laid on the table in front of him, followed by the Duke of Rothesay, the Queen Consort, the Lord Chancellor, the Secretary of State for Scotland, the First Minister of Scotland, the Lord Advocate of Scotland, and the Lord President of the Court of Session.
