Goodbye Eritrea! I am leaving tonight at the end of almost four years and this will be my last tweet. There have been ups and downs but we will miss the many friends we have made and the beautiful countryside. Peace is on the horizon. Farewell and Good luck
The COP27, taking place in Sharm El-Sheikh, is an opportunity to move the needle-#UNDP in #Eritrea is partnering with government & communities to champion & respond to this global emergency,& supporting #Eritrea to realize its pledges on climate action @UNDPAfrica@UNinEritrea
Welcome the outcome of the AU negotiations agreeing a cessation of hostilities and urge all to take this step now towards a lasting peace in the region and end the tragic loss of lives
Welcome important agreement between the Ethiopian Government and Tigrayan authorities to end the terrible conflict in northern #Ethiopia. I applaud their choice of peace, and the mediation efforts of African Union, South Africa and Kenya. UK is ready to support the peace process.
Important meeting with Deputy PM @demekehasen today.
Discussed long-standing 🇬🇧🇪🇹 partnership.
I urged for
➡️cessation of hostilities
➡️join AU-led peace talks
➡️restart humanitarian access to Tigray
➡️Eritrea troops should withdraw
For the sake of the people of Ethiopia.
Terrible news of another aid worker killed in #Tigray. Aid workers need access & safety to perform life-saving work – as set out in International Humanitarian Law. Gravely concerned about potential for renewed atrocities in Tigray – urge protection of civilians as priority.
Today is World Mental Health Day. Anyone can experience poor mental health - any gender, any age, any country. Let’s make recognising the importance of Mental Health and Wellbeing a global priority. And above all be kind - we rarely know what is beneath the surface. #WMHD2022
In this moment of peril, I must underscore my duty as Secretary-General to uphold the @UN Charter.
The Charter is clear.
Any annexation of a State’s territory by another State resulting from the threat or use of force is a violation of the Principles of the Charter & int’l law.
Feast of the Holy Cross or Meskel here in Asmara today. Lots of Eritreans celebrating this special day in the Eritrean orthodox calendar. Nice to be a part of it
Important conversation with Ethiopian DPM @DemekeHasen yesterday. I expressed concern about impact of renewed conflict on humanitarian crisis in northern #Ethiopia and reiterated calls for a truce, restoration of humanitarian access to #Tigray, and for Eritrean forces to leave.
Gravely concerned by escalation of fighting in #Ethiopia. The involvement of Eritrean forces will deepen the conflict and exacerbate one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises - they should leave #Tigray. UK calls on all parties to reinstate the truce and begin peace talks.
A National Moment of Reflection will take place with a one-minute silence at 8pm tonight to mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and reflect on her life and legacy.
On behalf of a grieving nation I offer my deepest condolences on the passing of Her Majesty.
She was the rock on which modern Britain was built.
The thoughts of this government and this nation are with His Majesty The King and his family.
The British Embassy has the sad honour to relay the news of the death of Her Majesty The Queen on Thursday 8 September 2022. A condolence book will be open at the British Embassy on Friday 9 September from 11 to 13:00 and from Monday 12 to Friday 16 September from 9 to 16:00.
The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.
The whole country will be deeply concerned by the news from Buckingham Palace this lunchtime.
My thoughts - and the thoughts of people across our United Kingdom - are with Her Majesty The Queen and her family at this time.
Cycled out of Asmara this morning along the Keren road. The countryside is looking very green after the rains. Dodged more rain on way back taking new ring road
The return to conflict in Ethiopia will be catastrophic for its people – I urge all parties to stop fighting and begin talks. Full statement below ⬇️
