A true story: How the Life Savers called Military Doctors save lives..

Dafedar Ram Lakhan from 41 Armoured Regiment while deployed in Rajasthan Desert, was bitten on shoulder by a highly vanomous Desert Krait Snake while sleeping in his tent in the wee hours of night.

He was lucky as it was the time for sentry changing and two men proceeding to sentry post were awake and had torches with them. A panicky and worried Ram Lakhan informed them, "Mujhe kandhe pe kuchh kata hai."
The other Soldiers saw the bite marks, it was a definite snake bite.

Their torchlight saw a snake roaming around in the snake pit surrounding the tent.
The snake had probably sneaked in the tent through some tree roots which were there around the pit.
Ram Lakhan was rushed to 184 MH at Suratgarh, Sriganganagar, Rajsthan in an emergency vehicle.+

The Doctor (let's call him Maj X) was informed about the incoming patient.

Fortunately for Ram Lakhan, Maj X specialised in snake bites, he reached Hospital much before the patient and was waiting. Dr took it upon himself to save the Soldier.The patient was still in his senses while the emergency vehicle arrived at the Hospital.

Much time has passed since the snake bite, just after his arrival at the hospital, there was frothing at his mouth (foam - saliva started to come out of his mouth) as patient lost consciousness.

The Good Doc X injected him Life saving drugs and declared, "If the patient survives the next 24 hours, he will be safe."

A stitch in time ensured that Ram Lakhan survived to tell the tale. He was discharged from the hospital after 8 days of observation and treatment.
It took the Doc six months of treatment to take out full poison from his body.

That season in 99 saw 33 snake bites among troops in the area, doctors saved 32 of them. One unfortunate Soldier lost his life as he was bitten in tongue. (That is another story for another day)

If a soldier's life is in danger and he sees an AMC Badge on the Cap & Shoulder (Indian Army) or the red stripes on the shoulder (Indian Navy) or the medical officers of the IAF, he /she is sure that it's in safe hands.

Personally for me, I am walking today because, I was saved by some of them.
