Telling the stories of Ukraine and the Ukrainian American experience and connecting generations through exhibitions, archives, and educational programming.
“The experience of documenting testimonies of the #Holodomor via the means of oral history can be transformative for all parties involved. And in my trade of an oral historian, I know it too well that when storytelling event takes place, it carries within itself formidable power of identity building, allowing individuals, their families, communities and entire societies to remember and restore their sense of themselves. If stories are not told, how do we know who we are? If memory is not upheld, what will become of us?,” said Dr. Natalia Khanenko-Friesen, Director of the @CanadianInstit3, at Edmonton’s Holodomor commemoration. @NewPathwayNews https://t.co/ql5Y38X3PM
Our archivist attending the #ASEEES23 conference had a chance to meet the daughter of the artist Bohdan Pevny, creator of the famous #Holodomor painting "Zemlia": https://t.co/csXUlbhkAM
It was a pleasure meeting @OlenkaPevny of @CamSlavicDept on the last day of #ASEEES23. A scholar in her own right, she also happens to be daughter of artist Bohdan Pevny, creator of the famous "Zemlia" #Holodomor painting.

1) Thinking of my great-grandmother Darka, who was the first person from whom I learned about Holodomor, Stalin's human-made famine that murdered millions of Ukrainians resisting Soviet collectivisation in 1932-1933. She survived it and used to tell me horror stories, and
Today, we commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor. As a scholar of the Holodomor, I find it nothing short of tragic that this event has many parallels to Russia’s genocidal war taking place right now. I believe in knowledge as resistance, so I’m going to share 1/

With thoughts about my family who survived Holodomor and who couldn’t. And about all Ukrainians and unknown artists that we’ve lost. Because we’ve lost not only people, we’ve lost knowledge, art, traditions with this innocents. But we didn’t lost our memory and our spirit.

Russian weaponization of archives. For those familiar with Ukrainian/Russian relations, this is no surprise. Incidentally, the February 21, 2022 speech by Putin prompted our first statement about what was then still a "crisis": https://t.co/COzKP4CjBp
Russia's Federal Archival Agency has published a collection of documents "On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians" to substantiate Putin's wild allegations made in his 2021 article of the same name.

It was 95 years ago, on Oct. 1, 1928, that Stalin announced his Five-Year Plan, seeking rapid industrialization and growth for the Soviet Union. To support this ambitious plan, his regime turned to collectivization, seizing family-run farms and imposing unattainable quotas on farmers. The consequences were devastating and millions of Ukrainians suffered and died in the 1932-1933 #Holodomor famine.
