Yesterday marked #WorldParrotDay, a global celebration of parrots and an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges they face in the wild, including habitat loss and the wildlife trade.
To mark the occasion, we highlighted South Africa’s only endemic parrot, the Cape Parrot, our jewel of the forest. Earlier this month, the School of Agriculture and Science supported the annual Cape Parrot Big Birding Day, organised by the Cape Parrot Working Group (CPWG), which is based primarily at UKZN.
This national census, conducted regularly since 1998, has played a key role in monitoring Cape Parrot populations and contributed to the species being downgraded from Endangered to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List in 2025.
While this is an encouraging conservation milestone, Cape Parrots still need ongoing support to survive and thrive. As a flagship species for South Africa’s dwindling Mistbelt forests, their future remains closely linked to the health of these unique ecosystems.

Three UKZN Footballers Recruited to Durban City
Fresh off a historic Nedbank Cup victory and an impressive first season in Betway Premiership, Durban City FC has strengthened its partnership with the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) by recruiting three student footballers into its DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) Squad for the 2026/27 season.
The students, Amukelwa Tau, Wandile Gigaba and Lwandiso Yalo were officially introduced on Wednesday night during a special unveiling ceremony held at the UKZN Football Stadium on the Howard College Campus.
The ceremony celebrated the players’ progression from university football into the professional development structures of one of South Africa’s fastest-rising football clubs.
The players’ selection follows just over a year after UKZN and Durban City FC formalised a strategic partnership aimed at advancing high-performance football development and creating opportunities for talented young players.
Speaking at the event, officials from both Durban City FC and UKZN congratulated the players and reaffirmed a shared commitment to nurturing student-athletes who excel both academically and on the field.
Executive Director for Corporate Relations at UKZN, Dr Normah Zondo described the unveiling as a significant milestone for both organisations,
“This is truly an exciting moment as we celebrate not only a partnership but the opening of real opportunities for our students. We are immensely proud of the three students selected to play for Durban City FC, as they represent the incredible talent and potential within our University community. Through collaborations like this, we are connecting education, leadership and opportunity in powerful ways,” she said.
Chief Executive Officer of Durban City FC, Younus Kadodia, emphasised the club’s long-term commitment to developing young talent and strengthening community partnerships.
“For Durban City FC, this partnership reinforces our vision of building a sustainable and progressive football club that remains deeply connected to the community. We look forward to growing this relationship and creating opportunities that will inspire and benefit future generations,” he said.
The students expressed their gratitude and excitement at joining the squad. The unveiling was followed by an exciting friendly match between UKZN FC and the Durban City FC DDC, giving supporters an opportunity to see the newly recruited players in action.
A Vocal Masterclass will be presented by Dr Lisa Engelbrecht, Vocal Coach and Répétiteur at Opera UCT, on Saturday 30th May from 10h00-13h00 in the Howard College Theatre. Six senior students from the UKZN Opera Studio and Choral Academy (OSCA), have been selected to participate in the Masterclass. We encourage students and the larger Durban public to attend the Masterclass since Dr Engelbrecht is highly regarded as an international Vocal Coach and Répétiteur. Entrance is free of charge.
This will be followed by a Concert in the Howard College Theatre from 15h00 – 16h30, featuring the award-winning South African baritone Sandile Zitha from the SA College of Music at the University of Cape Town, accompanied on the piano by Dr Lisa Engelbrecht. In addition to their exciting and varied programme, including Zitha performing the Pearl Fishers’ duet by Georges Bizet with our very own tenor Nonkanyiso Khumalo, the OSCA Ensemble under the direction of Lionel Mkhwanazi, the Head of OSCA and accompanied by Senzekile Biyela, will perform excerpts from Carmen by Georges Bizet. Tickets are available at the door from 14h30 at R50 per adult and R20 for pensioners. UKZN students will be allowed free entrance. A gem of a concert not to be missed!
“Not all closed doors are locked,” advised UKZN President of Convocation, Dr Qiniso Mlita, as the University wrapped up its Autumn Graduation ceremonies.
Welcoming the new graduates into the UKZN Convocation, Mlita encouraged them to embrace entrepreneurship. He said the University prepares graduates not only to become employees, but employers as well.
