@JulianRoepcke@SlottkeSwe67524 Erstens: Mit welchem Recht haben sich die USA und die NATO überhaupt in die Verhandlungen eingemischt anstatt die Entscheidung den Ukrainern zu überlassen?
Zweitens: Warum verschweigt man uns, was Boris Johnson damals dem ukr.
"We would never have dreamed of lifting a finger without the Maidan coup. We had accepted Russia's 1991 borders, but we never accepted NATO's enlargement, and we never accepted that Ukraine should become part of NATO"
-President Vladimir Putin
The proxy war between the United States and Russia in Ukraine belongs to the age-old pattern of rivalry between empires competing for world dominance.
This war is a classic conflict between a dominant superpower convinced that the time has come to finish off, once and for all, a weakened rival.
A misjudgment of the balance of power is a classic mistake in the outbreak of wars.
Falsely convinced of the designated enemy's military weakness, the hegemonic superpower enters the conflict with overconfidence, only to set itself on the road to defeat: military defeat against Russia, and military defeat against Iran.
The declining United States is no different in its ordinary behavior from the empires that have shaped history.
Two elephants are locked in combat, and in their Homeric struggle they trample Ukraine and Europe beneath their feet.
The inevitable defeat of the United States in Ukraine will sound the death knell of the European Union and, at the same time, of NATO.
Maybe future generations of Germans will understand the colossal gift their government threw away with disregarding Vladimir Putin.
A Russian leader who lived in Dresden for years, speaks German, whose daughter was born in Saxony, and who repeatedly offered genuine partnership and friendship to the German people.
Around the turn of the millennium, there was a real chance to combine Russian resources with German engineering and build a powerful, nearly untouchable alliance stretching from Vladivostok to Lisbon.
Instead, short-sighted and corrupt German politicians sabotaged it all, willingly aligning themselves with those in Washington who would rather see Germany and Russia locked in a devastating conflict.
What could have been a historic partnership was tossed aside for political expediency, and the devastating consequences are still unfolding.
Here is the historic speech the Russian president delivered in German to the Bundestag on September 25, 2001.
He directly addressed the German people in their own language.
This was a moment that, had it been seized, would have changed everything....
Women Perpetrators of the 1941 Lviv Pogrom
A few years ago, I published an article on the anti-Jewish pogroms in Galicia in 1941. One section examined Ukrainian women as perpetrators. It earned me my superiors' disapproval at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and a closed-door lecture from my boss about "patriotism" and the historian's "responsibility" in a "difficult time for the nation". The article was published nonetheless.
It tells the story of Ukrainian women who urged their husbands to beat, murder, and rob Jews.
Women who joined the carnival-like crowds in the streets of Lviv, celebrating the violence inflicted on their Jewish neighbors.
Women who shoved Jewish women, looted their ransacked homes for the last pillows and plates, and pointed pogromists toward Jewish houses.
"There were many women among the criminals—young Ukrainian peasant women no less cruel than the men," recalled the Lviv Jewish survivor Wilek Markiewicz.
In some cases, women proved even more relentless than their male counterparts. On July 1, 1941, on what was then Legionów Street, a mob seized the prominent Lviv lawyer Dr. Herman Allergand, his wife Zinaida, and their nine-year-old son Leon, intending to drag them to Brygidki Prison.
Along the way, Allergand—a former officer in the Polish Army—appealed to a German officer for help. The officer ordered the mob to release the family, and they obeyed.
But one Ukrainian woman refused to let them go.
She continued chasing the family through the streets. When they reached No. 20 Jagiellońska Street, where Allergand's father lived, Zinaida begged the German guard at the entrance to let them inside. He admitted her and the child but barred her husband. The mob immediately descended on Allergand, beating and robbing him of his silver watch, hat, and money before handing him over to the Germans, who marched him to Brygidki.
The testimony does not reveal whether the woman who had pursued the family was among those who attacked him. What it makes unmistakably clear is that she was still there.
This story, like so many others, demonstrates that Ukrainian women were willing perpetrators of anti-Jewish violence during the 1941 Lviv Pogrom. Their brutality fits the heroic national narrative even less comfortably than that of their male counterparts.
Yet these stories must be told—for the sake of their victims and for the sake of the democratic future of Ukraine's multicultural nation. A society that refuses to confront the crimes committed in its name cannot build an honest or inclusive future.
More on women in pogroms in my article in the comments.
"Beaten as a preventive measure."
That's the caption accompanying a photo from Ukraine's Skelia Regiment, published by journalist Kateryna Lykhohliad.
The scandal surrounding the unit is only growing. Social media is filling with testimonies from people whose relatives and friends were allegedly tortured—or even murdered by their own commanders—while serving in Skelia.
MP Maryana Bezuhla claims that both President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi have been aware of these allegations for over a year.
Yet no one has been brought to justice.
@ZelenskyyUa Why, Ukraine? Why? Why do you spit on those who are your friends? On those who welcomed you into their own homes? On those who trained you on their own soil?
Why Azov Regiment? Why are you proud of the Volhynia massacre? 😥
85 years ago, on June 25, 1941, in Kaunas, where the Germans entered, the mass extermination of Jews began.
The pogrom lasted for 5 days. To the cheers of the audience, up to 4,000 people, including women and children, were brutally murdered by Lithuanian citizens.
Public torture and executions were accompanied by very wild scenes. Thus, one of the victims, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ossovsky, had his head sawn off in front of his wife and children, and his head was put up in a public place with the inscription: "This is what we will do to all Jews."
One of the active participants in the pogrom, Juozas Luksha, is now honored as a "hero" in modern European Lithuania.
