'Byzantine society was riven by a sharp polarization between the Blues and Greens, racing teams from the Hippodrome that corresponded to Christian sects professing belief in Monophysite and Monothelite doctrines respectively.'

@WASPZoomer The Guinness family is steeped in Gaelic stories. Many notable Guinness men have claimed Gaelic descent, including heads of the brewing branch of the family. So what if they're Protestant?

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@47Tolkien 'Irish or Ulster' is meaningless. Write 'Ulster-Scot', since I presume that that is what you're attempting to constrast with the Irish sample. The majority of Ulster folk are genetically indistinguishable from other Irish people. Not every Ulsterman is an Ulster-Scot.

@0uterProduct @HomericFuturist 'Border Reivers' really one-shotted lots of people..

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@VemFings @AnInnes3 Gaelic. Scots later came to refer to the Germanic language of Inglis.

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@Domhnallbain @goat_poaster They really, really do not.

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@yamnaya9 Why 'Anglo-Saxon, Scottish, and Irish' and not simply 'English, Scottish and Irish'?

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@Steve_Boer1865 @HomericFuturist French was the language of the court for well over a century, however...

@fiddlersgreen03 @rinagaelriochta Ice Hockey speaks to my soul. Watching Ricky play ball hockey in tpb is a great buzz haha

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@richardintheuk It actually is. Spend considerable time there and it becomes quite clear.

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@YoungGroypClips The term 'scientist' was literally coined as a gender-neutral alternative to 'man of science' because of a particular female scientist—Mary Somerville. Ever heard of Hannah Arendt? This misogynistic slop is pathetic.

@john_st_helen @whiteraven271 @appyobliged Ayrshire, Galloway ect. were historically Gaelic areas in the Lowlands where many planters of Ulster were drawn from in the 17th century (a notable minority were drawn from Argyll as well). Not as simple as Gaels = Highlands and Anglo-Scots = Lowlands.

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@john_st_helen @whiteraven271 @appyobliged Yes, but the context is that many Lowlanders outside of the south-east of the country around Lothian are of Gaelic extraction. The Highlanders called Lowlanders a mongrel race because they mixed with Anglos and adopted their language and culture. West of Scotland is most Gaelic.

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@john_st_helen @whiteraven271 @appyobliged And Scottish Gaelic developed from Middle Irish amongst Gaels in Scotland.

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@JohnMcKaycph6 @john_st_helen @flaartblooger @appyobliged We quite literally were once one people, as you rightly said. The greatest differences between Ireland are Scotland (particularly NE Ireland and W Scotland) are religious and cultural, not genetic.

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@john_st_helen @whiteraven271 @appyobliged And many Scots are of Gaelic (i.e., Irish) descent. Where on earth do you think that the various Gaelic surnames that Scots-Irish folk in the States sport (McCormick, Campbell, Callaghan, Buchanan, Cassidy, Carroll ect.) sprung from? You do not understand Scotland or Ulster.

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@john_st_helen @flaartblooger @appyobliged But yes, 300 years ago the feeling of oneness between the populations of Ireland and Scotland was greatly diminished, if not yet entirely extinguished.

[Ultán de Búrca @Ultan_de_Burca]

@john_st_helen @flaartblooger @appyobliged Scots of different extractions did not see each other as the same people 300/400 years ago. Highlanders were still entirely Gaelic in the 17th century, however, and were viewed by Germanic-Scots as being essentially Irish. The below article is interesting.

@edgesurfer_ Over five decades of precedence...what do you think inspired NICRA and the wider civil rights movement in the 60s? But yes, very odd to use Rosa Parks imagery in Ireland in 2026.

@john_st_helen @whiteraven271 @appyobliged So, to definitively pronounce that they're not Irish isn't really correct. But of course, they're not the same as the traditionally Catholic Irish population.
