Amin Abdullah showed up for work on Monday, just as he did every day.

He was the security guard at the Islamic Center of San Diego, the city's largest mosque. A devoted husband and father of eight, he took his duty so seriously that he sometimes skipped lunch, worried something might happen while he was away.

Just after 9 a.m., two armed teenagers rushed toward the entrance. Amin recognized the danger immediately.

He drew his weapon and returned fire. As bullets flew, he grabbed his radio with his free hand and ordered the entire school into lockdown. Just 15 feet away, 140 children were sitting in their classrooms.

Amin was the first to be shot.

Two more men ran toward the danger. Mansour Kaziha, 78, who had managed the mosque store for nearly 40 years, called 911 before confronting the attackers to draw them away from the building. Nadir Awad, 57, heard the gunfire from his nearby home and rushed to help.

Both men were killed.

Police arrived within four minutes. By then, the two teenage attackers had fled the property and died by suicide. Investigators say they had met online and were radicalized to target Muslims because of their faith and the place where they worshipped.

Not a single child was harmed.

Two weeks earlier, Amin's final Facebook post asked Allah for "a righteous ending to life." His daughter, Hawaa, called him her best friend. More than $2 million has been raised to support his family.

He wasn't just a security guard.

He was the last line of defense.

May Allah grant Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad Jannatul Firdaus and accept them among the martyrs. Ameen. 🤲
