As my mandate as UN Independent Expert on the rights of persons with albinism enters its final year, I've been thinking about how far we've come — and how much is still ahead.
The work is not finished. Sharing my full reflection here:

I encourage other States that havent yet done so to develop and implement similar action plans, in partnership with persons with albinism and their representative organisations.

I congratulate Malawi on the renewal of its National Action Plan on Albinism. This important step reaffirms the country’s commitment to the rights, inclusion and protection of persons with albinism.
On the 19th June marked an important milestone for the rights of persons with albinism in #Malawi with the launch of the successor National Action Plan on Albinism.
Speaking at the launch, Africa Albinism Network Executive Director, Bonface Massah, highlighted the importance of National Action Plans as frameworks that bring together governments, communities, and other stakeholders to strengthen accountability, coordination, trust, and timely responses to human rights challenges affecting persons with albinism.
Representing the Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Deputy Minister of Education Francis Faley reaffirmed the Government of Malawi's commitment to advancing inclusion and expanding access to employment and economic opportunities for persons with albinism.
Governments are critical partners in advancing the rights of persons with albinism, and we welcome this important step towards strengthening protection, inclusion, and equal opportunities in Malawi.

PRESS RELEASE ALERT!
As I conclude my visit to Pakistan, I thank the Government, UN partners, civil society and the persons with albinism and their families who shared their experiences with me. I am encouraged by the constructive engagement demonstrated throughout this mission..
Had a productive meeting with Ms. Muluka-Anne Miti-Drummond, UN Independent Expert, and Mr. Abou Jeng of OHCHR Geneva. Discussed promoting awareness, inclusion, and protection of the rights of persons with albinism.
The Chairperson NCRC welcomed Ms. Muluka-Anne Miti-Drummond, UN Independent Expert on the Rights of Persons with Albinism, and Mr. Abou Jeng, Human Rights Officer, OHCHR, for an important discussion on the rights and protection of children with albinism in Pakistan.
Albinism is a rare, non-contagious genetic condition that reduces pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes. Yet the biggest challenges these children face come not from the condition itself, but from how society treats them — stigma, discrimination, exclusion in schools, barriers to healthcare, and, too often, threats to their safety.
The discussion examined these issues in detail and drew on international best practices — including the UN's Regional Action Plan on Albinism, awareness campaigns to dispel harmful myths, inclusive education models, and targeted health interventions — to identify what can be adapted to Pakistan's context. @NCRC_Pakistan@AyeshaRaza13@mohrpakistan@ForeignOfficePk@UnAlbinism@OHCHRAsia

People with albinism are not myths, curses, symbols or curiosities. They are people — fully human, fully themselves, and part of every community.

Persons with albinism are more than society’s assumptions about appearance.
They are leaders, creators, workers, students, parents, and rights-holders.
