Meet Dr. Patricia E. Bath. In the year of 1974, Dr. Bath was appointed to the faculty of UCLA's School of Medicine Jules Stein Eye Institute as the first woman ophthalmologist.

Dr. Bath invented a new method and device for cataract surgery known as laserphaco, short for laser photoablative cataract surgery. This device is an instrument that advanced the use of lasers to remove cataracts and for “ablating and removing cataract lenses”.

Meet Susie Baker King Taylor!

Mrs. Taylor is known for being the first black nurse during the American civil war. She is also the first black woman to openly teach in a school in Georgia, where education was deemed illegal for enslaved people.

Documenting her encounters as a nurse during the war, she wrote and published her memoirs in 1902. She became the first black woman to self publish her memoirs. Mrs. Taylor took part in engineering the Women’s Relief Corps, elected President in 67.
