Damn I’m glad I grew up in this era man. What’s crazy is, these were the young guys. So much soul you can go back and reflect on a current time in your life and make sense of it
i loved once it's a beautiful feeling but it's painful when it's over i'll never do it again it's a financial risk and burden and you really don't get much in return
Little Richard sold the rights to Tutti Frutti for $50. Elvis recorded it. Pat Boone outsold him with it. Michael Jackson ended up owning it.
His own records paid him half a cent a copy.
In the video below, he walks onto the Grammy stage in 1988 to present Best New Artist and reads out his own name. Then he explains where the money went.
He signed with Specialty Records in 1955. Black artists of that era often got no royalties at all. White artists got 3 to 5%.
"Whoever heard of cutting a penny in half," he said later.
The label's owner, Art Rupe, paid him that $50. From then on, the label owned his song.
His Tutti Frutti hit No. 2 on the R&B chart, the one most white listeners never saw. Boone's version went higher on the pop chart.
In 1984 he sued for $112 million in unpaid royalties. It settled out of court. The terms were never made public.
A year later Michael Jackson bought the ATV catalog, and Little Richard's songs came with it.
He never won a competitive Grammy. In 1993 the Academy gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Forty years after Tutti Frutti, TLC sold 10 million albums and filed for bankruptcy. Same business, new decade.
Was he robbed, or was half a cent the going rate for a Black artist in 1955?
Tomorrow: a bigger name and a worse contract.

Cormega feat. Mobb Deep - "Killaz Theme"
(Produced by Havoc)
Def Jam really did bad shelving Mega's debut. Album was fire. This joint here belongs in The Louvre!
Hulk Hogan left about $5 million. His will names his daughter only to cut her out.
The July 28, 2023 amendment reads: "Under no circumstances shall Brooke E. Bollea or any descendants of Brooke E. Bollea be considered a beneficiary."
Court papers listed $200,000 in crypto, $799,000 in personal and intellectual property and a $4 million right of publicity. Sole beneficiary: his son Nick.
Brooke had asked to be taken out. She said she did not want to fight her mother or his third wife over money after he was gone. She still hoped he would ask why.
He signed it. He had skipped her 2022 wedding and told her husband he doesn't do weddings or funerals anymore.
The case for Hulk: she asked, he did exactly what she asked.
The case for Brooke: she wanted a phone call, not a signature.
In the video below she says how quickly she was erased.
Was he honoring her wish or punishing her for it?
