No, Yoane Wissa is not from the East DR Congo!

Yoane Wissa Bileko, the player, was born in France, in the Paris region, on September 3, 1996, to Congolese parents: Jean-Marie Wissa Bileko and Élysée Wissa Weyi.

In March 2022, already targeted by the same rumors during his debut with the national team, his paternal uncle, Guy Wissa, set the record straight on social media: “Wissa Bileko Yoane is neither Munyamulenge, nor Rwandan, nor from South Kivu. We are from Kongo Central, from the Besi-ngombe people, in the Mbanza-Ngungu territory.”

He specified that the player’s grandfather, Robert Wissa Bileko, is a co-founder of the UDPS. The fact-checking organization Congo Check, a member of the international network of fact-checkers, confirmed this denial.

The rumor was fueled by a seemingly insignificant detail: Wissa spent a vacation in Masisi, in the east of the country, which was enough for some to invent an Eastern, then foreign, origin for him.

Whether a Congolese person is from the East or the West doesn't change their Congolese identity.
