•Suspect says ‘I knew my son was a k!dnapper, but I thought he had stopped’

ABDULLAI Muhammadu, the 67-year-old Seriki Fulani and leader of the Fulani community in Ijebu Ode, who was arrested alongside his eldest child by the police in Ogun State for recent kidnapp!ngs around communities in the Ijebu area, has pleaded innocence, but one of the bags with which ransom was delivered was recovered in his kitchen.

He, however, admitted that he was aware that one of his sons, Bala Muhammadu, is into kidnapp!ng, but that he felt that he had turned a new leaf.

I still remember the story of Alhaji Adamu Abache in Ido Ekiti, Ekiti State. He was the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Ekiti State and was also honoured with chieftaincy titles before he was arrested for kidnapp!ng.

Before his arrest in 2022, his son had murd*red a pregnant woman in Orin Ekiti Farm Settlement and he protected the son until Fayose, who was governor then threatened to send him out of Ekiti if he failed to produce his criminal son within one week. In three days, he produced the son.

If these k!dnappings must stop in Yorubaland, all these Fulani Leaders must be checked. Many of them are the Baba Isale of k!dnappers.

So ₦20,000 × $1.80 = $36,000

At a rough black-market rate of about ₦0.90 per $1

That is ₦20,000 = $22,000

So depending on which rate you use, ₦20,000 in 1980 could have been worth somewhere around $22,000–$36,000 USD.
