gon is not a typical shonen protagonist. he does have shonen traits that are part of almost every shonen main character but doesn't have shonen morality. that separates him from others as well as the way togashi handled his character arc and conclusion

@w0nderful_47 @MKUltraMoney frieren is a SHONEN anime, half its first season was a full blown tournament arc - which sucked btw. Watch Heike Monogatari for something that showcases how ephemeral life is while being actually good or Mushishi or Kino's Journey or March Comes in Like a Lion

The series starts with Laois sis being eaten by a dragon and it escalates as they get deeper into the unknown of the dungeon (a world that is actually full of life with the most fleshed out ecosystem anime has ever seen)
