Today, we paused at our metaphorical Chautari to reflect on a remarkable journey.

@UNDPNepal proudly celebrated 60 years of steadfast partnership with the Government and the people of Nepal, honoring six decades of shared progress and resilience.

We were privileged to be joined by the Hon’ble Minister of Finance (@mofnepal), Dr. @SwarnimWagle, who shared a deeply personal connection as a @UNDP alumnus, having contributed to the Nepal Human Development Report in the 1990s and the Global Human Development Report in 2012.

In his keynote address, Hon’ble Minister Dr. Wagle highlighted UNDP’s critical role in seeding vital investments and delivering on both global and regional public goods. He commended our ongoing engagement in climate action and democratic governance, encouraging us to build on these foundations to foster even stronger cross-border collaboration.

UNDP Resident Representative @KyokoYokosuka joined the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Heads of UN Agencies in a meeting with Hon. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shisir Khanal, to reaffirm the United Nations’ enduring partnership with Nepal.

From Poverty Alleviation to the "3Ds" Era 🏔️

In 1995, 55% of Nepalis lived below the poverty line. Today, that number is under 1%. While we celebrate this monumental milestone, Nepal's development landscape is shifting—and so must our approach.

Speaking at UNDP Nepal’s 60th-anniversary celebration, Hon’ble Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle highlighted that Nepal’s future will be guided by three powerful forces—the "3Ds," and how UNDP can create an impact:
📲 Promoting Digitalization by bridging communities and transforming governance.
🚀 Empowering Demography by shaping green, decent jobs and leadership opportunities for a young, ambitious generation.
🌐 Engaging the Diaspora by connecting global minds, talent, and resources back to the homeland.

As we look toward the horizon, I remain confident that UNDP will walk side by side with Nepal to turn these forces into lasting progress, he noted.

We were honored to welcome the Minister of Finance—and former @UNDP economist—Dr @SwarnimWagle as our Guest of Honour at the #UNDPNepal60 celebrations! 🇳🇵🇺🇳

Reflecting on his regional work with UNDP in Vietnam, he highlighted UNDP’s historic "appetite for new ventures and new risks."

Following the 2001 WTO conference , he recalled UNDP boldly stepping out of its comfort zone to ensure internationa trade policies weren't just left to technical ministries, but were recognized as forces that deeply impact everyday livelihoods.

While looking back at the unprecedented global unanimity around trade and development in the early 2000s, the Minister left us with a powerful, sobering call to action for the future.

Noting that global development assistance and national priorities have recently become fragmented, he challenged UNDP to venture beyond comfort zones.

His defining message to us? "The cohesive whole, that global ethos, has very much vanished—and we have to reclaim that."

Thank you, Hon'ble Minister, for reminding us of the urgent need for global unity as we look to the future. 🌍

It's been sixty years!

The celebration brought together a diverse coalition of partners, including distinguished representatives from the Government of Nepal, mayors from across the country, ambassadors and development partners, as well as partners from civil society and the private sector.

Guests also explored a special photo exhibition and the launch of our commemorative photobook, showcasing the innovation, determination, and resilience of the Nepali people—the true drivers of Nepal’s development.

When legislatures learn from one another, democracy grows stronger.

The National Conference of Deputy Speakers of Provincial Assemblies and the Vice Chairperson of the National Assembly is bringing together legislative leaders from across Nepal to deepen collaboration, exchange experiences, and strengthen parliamentary institutions.

The conference provides an important platform to share good practices and explore ways to make the roles of Deputy Speakers and the Vice Chairperson more effective, efficient, and responsive to the evolving needs of democratic governance. Participants will also work towards a joint declaration to guide future cooperation and collective action among Nepal's legislative institutions.

Through @UNDP’s Parliament Support Project, supported by @NorwayinNepal, UNDP has been strengthening inter-legislative collaboration, including the establishment of the Inter-Parliamentary Forum as a platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and mutual learning.

Building on these efforts, the conference is expected to foster stronger institutional linkages, promote collaboration across legislatures, and contribute to more effective, inclusive, and responsive democratic governance in Nepal.

System change over silos: Co-designing the future of a Green, Digital Pokhara.

@UNDPNepal and @pokharamun came together for Portfolio Design and Sensemaking Workshop moving away from traditional development silos and using a systems-thinking approach to co-create an integrated urban transformation portfolio for the city.

Under the leadership of Mayor Dhan Raj Acharya and @UNDP Deputy Resident Representative and Officer in charge @JulienPRChev, private sector leaders, youth, academia, and tourism entrepreneurs mapped out three bold, interconnected shifts for Pokhara’s future:
📱 Resilience & Digital Transformation: Transitioning to seamless, digital municipal services to boost the ease of doing business and enable data-driven decisions.
🚀 Youth-led Entrepreneurship: Strengthening local ecosystems to turn innovative ideas into formal, thriving enterprises.
♻️ Regenerative & Circular Tourism: Translating Pokhara's natural beauty and circular economy opportunities into green jobs and waste-to-value solutions.

Together with the youth we are building an urban transformation model that creates a connect system.

Testing virtual readiness to save lives.

When disasters strike, coordination is just as critical as response. In a country like Nepal, where challenging terrain can limit physical access, the ability to coordinate virtually across all levels of government can make a life-saving difference.

Through the @eu_echo-funded SUPER-II project, implemented by a UNDP-led consortium with @unicef_nepal, @unwomennepal and @HI_federation, a virtual Tabletop Simulation (TTX) brought together federal, provincial and local Emergency Operation Centers (EOCs), Health Emergency Operation Centers (HEOCs), and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (@NDRRMA_Nepal) to test Nepal’s disaster coordination systems.

Using a simulated 7.9-magnitude earthquake on the Kalikot–Bajura border, participants navigated the critical first 48 hours of an emergency through a fast-paced, three-hour exercise with six evolving scenario “injects.” The simulation tested communication systems, decision-making, coordination protocols and the operational readiness of institutions, all in a fully virtual environment.

The lessons captured will help strengthen more resilient, responsive and adaptive coordination mechanisms from the federal to the local level, ensuring Nepal is better prepared when real emergencies occur.

Building on six provincial and municipal in-person simulations held across Sudurpashchim, Lumbini and Karnali provinces, this exercise marks another important step towards a more disaster-resilient #Nepal.

From laying the initial foundations in the 1960s, to building a digital, climate-resilient future in the 2020s, the journey of development in #Nepal is a story of resilience and progress.

National Carbon Pricing Policy is being developed to advance Nepal towards a low-carbon economy.

Together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment, UNDP convened over 60 representatives from the government, development partners, multilateral organizations, the private sector, and academia to review the Draft National Carbon Pricing Policy and its implementation roadmap. The discussions examined a phased approach to carbon pricing—beginning with a carbon tax, followed by Emissions Trading System (ETS), and ultimately a hybrid mechanism.

Aligned with Nepal's NDC 3.0, NAP, Green Growth Strategy, fiscal decentralization, and just transition priorities, the policy aims to strengthen climate finance, support emissions reduction, and enhance Nepal's readiness for carbon markets.

The breathtaking landscapes of the Api-Saipal region are capturing national attention.

Behind this growing recognition is a story of community-led, sustainable tourism. Through the Sustainable Tourism Project, @UNDP and the Nepal Tourism Board (@nepaltourismb) have supported local communities to upgrade trekking trails, improve homestays and tea houses, train hospitality entrepreneurs and local trekking guides, and connect Api Base Camp to the Great Himalayan Trail.

From near zero visitors just a few years ago to more than 5,000 trekkers annually, Api-Saipal is demonstrating how sustainable tourism can create livelihoods, inspire the youth to stay, and unlock new opportunities in remote mountain communities.

Access to finance can be the difference between an idea and a thriving agribusiness.

Today, nine local governments from Karnali, Sudurpashchim and Bagmati provinces joined hands with the Deposit & Credit Guarantee Fund (DCGF) to launch a new Individual Agriculture Credit Guarantee Scheme a separate with a Ring-fenced Guarantee Fund, opening new pathways to finance for smallholder farmers, cooperatives and agri-entrepreneurs in some of Nepal’s most underserved communities.

Speaking at the event UNDP Nepal’s Deputy Resident Representative and Officer-in-Charge, @JulienPRChev stated “Inclusive finance is essential to transform Nepal’s food systems and ensure that no community is left behind. Through this innovative partnership, we are helping unlock investment for smallholder farmers, women-led enterprises and rural entrepreneurs who are central to building resilient local economies.”

Similarly, @DCGFNEPAL CEO Mr. Dila Ram Giri highlighted that this Individual Agri CGS is designed to address the challenges of access, utilization and repayment of loans in agricultural sector through the engagement of local governments, partner banks, DCGF and UN.

Through the UN Joint Programme on Innovative Financial Solutions for Local Food Systems Transformation in Nepal, implemented by @UNDP in collaboration with @FAONepal, @WFP_Nepal and @UNCDF, this initiative is helping reduce lending risks for financial institutions while expanding opportunities for those who have traditionally struggled to access formal credit.

By investing in farmers and local entrepreneurs, we are investing in more resilient food systems and stronger local economies. 🌾
