@ModestTeacher "I'm glad you're here" goes a long way.
I also require a conference with the student and another adult after 5 absences. Nothing serious. I just need another grown up to look you in the eye and say the same thing I just said twenty times. "Be here!"
@JasonAblin Yes. When students say, "I'm done," I reply, "I'm not," and keep writing. After recovering from a brief tailspin, many will watch me write and dig back in with something new.
@Mr_Charles20 I will guide them to be...
I will inspire them to be...
I will prod them to be...
I will challenge them to be...
I will even double dog dare them to be...
If they're not there they're not there. You can punish, complain, or find a way to solve the problem.
@MonteSyrie Shop teacher here. Gatekeeping is a bit of a necessity because... fingers. However, I don't grade safety tests. They merely have to be mastered before using a tool. Retakes, notes, and peer help are okay.
Sometimes gatekeeping is a thing.
@jesseylynne Teaching for 27 years with 200 current students and I can say that most of the kids I talk to will say they have some form of phone addiction or nomophobia, even if not by name.
@jesseylynne I discovered that when I ask kids what they are doing on their phones without a punitive response, they give an honest answer. Then I challenge them to control their use. It's a slow process, but most are aware of their addiction.
