At 13, Kurt Marx fled Nazi Germany on the Kindertransport in 1939, helping bring a Sefer Torah to Britain alongside other Jewish children from his school in Cologne.
Now aged 100, he has been reunited with that same Torah and read again from the Bar Mitzvah portion he learned as a boy.
The scroll was rescued following Kristallnacht in 1938 and recently traced to Brondesbury Park Synagogue through work by the United Synagogue Heritage Team and the Association of Jewish Refugees, @TheAJR_.
Some photos from the United Synagogue's stall at the Maccabi Fun Run on Sunday!
We had KLBD goodies to try, the opportunity to find out more about our environmental initiative Dorot, and of course our bike challenge! 🧁🌳🚲
I was delighted to welcome the wonderful Rabbi Aaron and Rebbetzen Miriam Lipsey, and to officiate at the Induction of Rabbi Lipsey as Rabbi of the New West End Synagogue, so admirably led by Chairman, Jeff Altman.
I am heartbroken to learn of the killing of Michael Mizrahi, a member of Montreal’s Jewish community, alongside police officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, who lost his life in the same shocking attack in Côte-des-Neiges.
While the full circumstances are still unclear, our thoughts are with their families and loved ones. We stand with the Jewish community of Montreal at this painful time.
The violent attacks in Edinburgh on Friday, in which five men were injured and worshippers were assaulted as they left a mosque, are a horrifying act of anti-Muslim hatred on British soil.
I send best wishes to those who were hurt, to their families, and to Muslim communities across Scotland and the wider United Kingdom, for whom these days will have been filled with fear and grief.
United Synagogue Rebbetzens recently got together for a professional development conference, with the theme of the day being ‘Leading with Heart’.

Our members were there in full force, running to raise money for their communities. In this video, the United Synagogue's Elliot Shorrick speaks to Rabbi Akiva Rosen from Chigwell & Hainault Synagogue, whose runners ended up raising an incredible £3,000+ for their shul!

The Royal Fusiliers War Memorial commemorates soldiers of the regiment in both world wars. Among them are the 38th–40th Jewish battalions from the First World War. It adds important context to the story of Jewish service and remembrance in London.
It’s not an official stop on our Jews of London self-guided walking tour, but it sits close enough to make a worthwhile addition.

Recently, volunteers Sophie and Ruby from Jewish Deaf Association visited United Synagogue Head Office to teach staff some Jewish themed British Sign Language (BSL), helping bring greater inclusion and awareness into our workplace.
They also shared their experiences and insight into the Deaf community, before staff had the chance to put their new skills into practice.
After more than 27 years serving the Hendon community with dedication, warmth and distinction, Rabbi Mordechai and Rebbetzen Judy Ginsbury have announced that they will retire as Hendon United Synagogue’s senior rabbinic couple in May 2027.
Their impact on Hendon, and across the wider United Synagogue, has touched generations of families and inspired countless people along the way.
Please join us in thanking Rabbi and Rebbetzen Ginsbury for their decades of service, and wishing them all the very best in their next chapter.
