We are a cross-rank, cross-institution solidarity network of university researchers, educators, and workers. Together we can create a more equitable university.
It's nearly 2 months since our #uartsunion first asked @UArts prez @davidyager for the standard info a union needs to bargain a contract, and to schedule bargaining. UArts is clearly stalling, a favorite tactic of their anti-union lawyers @MorganLewisLaw. 1/2
If the "We've seen private schools do it with great success" argument can be the basis for school reopening, can it also be the basis for creating a sensible plan to vaccinate public school teachers? Asking for a friend. https://t.co/EXljUcJPHD
We definitely feel the same fear and would like to turn that fear into fuel for rethinking how decisions get made on our campuses and building power across institutions. Join us next Friday, Feb 5th for our General Assembly mtg 2-3pm. Registration information to follow.
Anyone else fear that higher ed is at a tipping point ?
All that will be left are:
- highly-paid admins
- football & basketball programs (coaches’ salaries)
- adjunctified faculty teaching a bazillion courses at $2000/class
- business & STEM classes
?? Maybe it’s just me.
@JohannaMellis Any interest in coalition building with folks on other campuses to help stem the tide? Our group meets on the 1st Friday of the month 2-3pm to talk about strategies to push back on these trends. Several folks from other schools in PA...
@Mikevago@JohannaMellis Sounds kinda like Antioch College in OH, though I know they've been having financial trouble ever since they reopened in 2011. They're a small(tiny) liberal arts college but with a mighty mission!
#UnionStrong The first step is convincing educators that they are indeed workers getting paid for their labor. Then you can #OrganizeToWin a more just contract & institution. Love to see it!
“At UMass Amherst, a study of faculty pay found something surprising: among full professors, women actually get paid more than men, on average. The reason? Their union.” #UnionStrong

Ask your students what they want! So many universities listen to consultants and make assumptions about what students *might* do. Rarely are students engaged in the process of how best to serve the mission of #HigherEd : educating undergrads...
Teachers working conditions are students learning conditions! #CoalitionBuilding with students is a powerful way to involve all campus & community stakeholders to make for a more just and equitable institution
And, please please please let your students know! These cuts will have a huge impact on their school experience. Normalize standing up for colleagues! Solidarity is a lesson we should teach everyday
“Many of my residents had COVID-19 and told me about it...but I was not informed by the university.”

This is #Neoliberalism & #Austerity#HigherEd at it's finest! The margins are tight where the actual mission of the university is concerned, so there is all of this emphasis on the auxiliaries (sports, dorms, etc) because that's how they can balance budgets & turn profits!
