We’re talking about a bridge crossing over the rapid waters of the Nile!! The work demands total alertness, expertise, finesse and high quality inputs/materials. Let’s not forget how we all dread the increasing cost of construction materials!
Now, think about what it takes to work on a bridge at Karuma . Is expertise cheap? Is workers’ safety cheap? The Goal of the repairs is to strengthen the Bridge to be able to facilitate access at Karuma for the next over 20 years! The new bridge will not wait for 20 years though as @GovUganda is right now involved in intense discussions with funding partners— JICA[🇯🇵] to build a new Bridge at this location.
Let’s break down the scope of works for better context;
1. Retrofitting the steel structures; involves strengthening & replacing worn out steel parts of the bridge to improve performance, extending its lifespan.
2. Demolition of the old bridge deck
The old surface deck was removed to make way for a stronger and more durable deck. The process began with milling off the old asphalt before demolishing the deck itself [Picture in frame 2].
3. Replacement of the bridge bearings
These components support the bridge deck giving it ability to handle stress and movement caused by loads.
3. Sandblasting of the steel trusses
Involves cleaning the steel framework to remove rust, old paint nd other contaminants thereby extending the bridge’s lifespan, preventing structural weakening.
4. Casting of concrete for the new deck
Pouring new concrete along with formwork and reinforcement steel, to improve the bridge’s capacity to handle traffic loads.
Each of these activities ensures the bridge is safe, functional and able to meet the modern transportation demands justifying each cost driver !
Hoping this helps us appreciate the relationship between the extent of scope and cost. Next time when we see a project like this, let’s try consider the complexity behind the scenes and the value/goal it delivers.

Today, December 30th, 2024, @Allen_Kagina, the outgoing Executive Director of the @UNRA_UG formally handed over the roads agency to the Ministry of Works and Transport, effectively ending her nearly ten years of leadership.
This follows the institution's dissolution as part of a broader government Rationalisation of Agencies and Public Expenditure (RAPEX) programme.
@CEOEastAfrica is proud to choose her as our Person of the Year 2024 for her transformational work at the government agency. Kagina, who earlier in August 2024 was named amongst Uganda's 100 top CEOs in the inaugural CEO East Africa Magazine's 100 Leading and Most Admired CEOs in Uganda Survey 2024, will be remembered for changing the face of UNRA through governance, staffing, and operational reforms. She expanded Uganda’s paved road network by 61%, improved efficiency, saved UGX 269 billion via in-house capacity, and fostered integrity, transparency, and local content promotion.

🔄TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Temporary Diversion Due to Slippery Road Conditions at Kalonga along Mityana—Mubende Highway
A 1Km section of the road at Kalonga is currently experiencing traffic congestion due to slippery conditions caused by heavy rains. This has coincided with ongoing maintenance works, making it difficult for motorists to access the area.
To ease the situation, our teams are working swiftly to address the bottleneck. In the meantime, motorists are advised to use an alternative route;
🔄Divert at Myanzi and proceed via Kassanda—Maddudu—Kiyuuya road, Turn Left to re-connect to the Mubende Highway.
❗️Please note;
•The diversion is a gravel but motorable road.
•The alternative route adds approximately 25 kms to your journey.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we work to restore normal traffic flow. #ConnectUg

⏮️As we transition, we continue to reflect on the areas of efficiency, innovation and dedication leading to improvement in Uganda’s transport systems.
The operation & maintenance of the Kampala—Entebbe Expressway is one example!
✅Revenue Growth
UGX 97.5 billion collected as Total revenue since commencement of toll operations in Jan 2022 with a 17.6% growth in the FY 2023/2024.
Road users are now willing to pay tolls for reliable, faster and safer travel, showcasing the value delivered by the Expressway.
✅Maintenance
Achieved over 90% performance in routine and emergency maintenance operations.
✅Incident Management/Surveillance
Presence of Regular Route patrols enabling management of 350 incidents, demonstrating @KEE_UG commitment to road safety, comfort and convenience.
✅Traffic Impact
Over 26,800 vehicles are currently using the Expressway on a daily basis, up from 21,000 vehicles in the first year of operation. This reinforces its role as a critical connectivity link given increased efficiency in operations and maintenance.
