Hearing the start of a joke about an "offensive" topic in a world where there are no real social consequences for offending people would just cause audiences to roll their eyes.

As a lag, once a subject stops being offensive, there will be many poor quality jokes on it.

I thought of something that's an example of a costly signal- comedians telling jokes on potentially offensive subjects.

It says "Pay attention! I'm so confident in my humor that I'm willing to risk social consequences."

What happens if the expected social consequences for being offensive (in general, or on a specific topic) decrease? You'd expect to see more low-talent comedians making such jokes.

In turn, audiences would stop paying as much attention to the signal.

Calling another person's opinion "bigoted" is also an exercise of an individual's own freedom of speech; it's expressing an opinion.
